Ein Team der Stanford University hat eine Methode entdeckt, Eisen in einen bisher unbekannten Energiezustand zu versetzen. Dieser Durchbruch k\u00f6nnte die Zukunft von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien und anderen Energietechnologien grundlegend ver\u00e4ndern.<br><br>Die Forschungsergebnisse zeigen, dass Eisen bis zu f\u00fcnf Elektronen abgeben und wieder aufnehmen kann, im Vergleich zu den bisher angenommenen zwei oder drei. Das bedeutet, dass Batterien leistungsst\u00e4rker und kosteng\u00fcnstiger werden k\u00f6nnten als solche auf Kobalt- oder Nickelbasis. Die Entdeckung k\u00f6nnte auch Auswirkungen auf andere Technologien wie MRT-Ger\u00e4te, Magnetschwebebahnen und Supraleiter haben.<br><br>Drei Doktoranden der Stanford University, Hari Ramachandran, Edward Mu und Eder Lomeli, leiteten ein 23-k\u00f6pfiges Forscherteam aus den USA, Japan und S\u00fcdkorea. Die entscheidende Innovation war die Nanostruktur einer Verbindung aus Lithium, Eisen, Antimon und Sauerstoff. Durch die Verkleinerung der Partikel auf 0,3\u20130,4 Mikrometer erm\u00f6glichten sie den Eisenatomen den Austausch von f\u00fcnf Elektronen, ohne die Kristallstruktur zu zerst\u00f6ren.<br><br>Lomelis Analyse der R\u00f6ntgenspektren best\u00e4tigte die Schl\u00fcsselrolle des Sauerstoffs. \u201eEs geht um das koordinierte Zusammenspiel der gesamten Struktur\u201c, erkl\u00e4rte er. Tests am SLAC-Zentrum zeigten, dass sich die Verbindung beim Laden leicht verbiegt, aber stabil bleibt.
