Der an der Southern University of Science and Technology (SUST) entwickelte Prototyp verwendet synthetische DNA-Str\u00e4nge, die auf eine d\u00fcnne Kunststofffolie gedruckt, zu einem Band aufgerollt und zwischen Spulen transportiert werden.<br><br>Das System kann bis zu 36 Petabyte Daten speichern, das sind etwa eine Million Gigabyte \u2013 genug f\u00fcr mehr als drei Milliarden Lieder. Digitale Dateien werden in DNA-Sequenzen (A, T, C, G) umgewandelt, die die bin\u00e4ren Nullen und Einsen ersetzen. Jeder Streifen enth\u00e4lt etwa 550.000 Abschnitte, in denen wei\u00dfe Bereiche die DNA-L\u00f6sung aufnehmen und schwarze Linien deren Ausbreitung verhindern. Der Scanner kann etwa 1.570 Positionen pro Sekunde erkennen.<br><br>Das System erm\u00f6glicht das Lesen, \u00dcberschreiben und L\u00f6schen von Daten. DNA-Str\u00e4nge k\u00f6nnen mehrfach verlustfrei sequenziert werden, und Enzyme k\u00f6nnen Daten mit einer Genauigkeit von nahezu 99,9 Prozent entfernen und ersetzen. Zum Schutz sind die Abschnitte mit einer kristallinen H\u00fclle aus metallorganischen Ger\u00fcsten \u00fcberzogen, die Wasser und Enzyme abschirmt. Dadurch bleibt die DNA bei Raumtemperatur jahrhundertelang und in k\u00e4lteren Umgebungen sogar zehntausende Jahre lang erhalten.<br><br>Obwohl die Kassette eine enorme Speicherkapazit\u00e4t bietet, ist sie im Vergleich zu herk\u00f6mmlichen Speichermedien langsam. Das Kopieren kleiner Dateien dauert mehrere Minuten, und die DNA-Synthese ist nach wie vor kostspielig.
