Erste Tests zeigen, dass der neue Chip fast 500-mal effizienter ist als die aktuell im Weltraum eingesetzten strahlungsresistenten Prozessoren. Das Projekt mit dem Namen High Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC) konzentriert sich auf die Entwicklung eines speziellen Systems, das extremen Bedingungen wie hoher Strahlung, starken Vibrationen beim Start und gro\u00dfen Temperaturschwankungen standh\u00e4lt.<br><br>Im Gegensatz zu herk\u00f6mmlichen Chips ist dieses \u201eSystem-on-a-Chip\u201c (SoC) so konzipiert, dass es Recheneinheiten, fortschrittliche Netzwerkfunktionen, Speicher und Ein-\/Ausgabeschnittstellen in einer einzigen kompakten Einheit vereint. Die Architektur \u00e4hnelt der von Smartphones und Tablets, die NAS-Version ist jedoch speziell f\u00fcr Umgebungen entwickelt, in denen ein Ausfall der Elektronik das Ende der Mission bedeuten w\u00fcrde.<br><br>Der Hauptvorteil des neuen Prozessors liegt in seiner Unterst\u00fctzung f\u00fcr Systeme k\u00fcnstlicher Intelligenz. Diese erm\u00f6glichen es Raumschiffen, ihre Umgebung zu analysieren, Gefahren zu umfahren und in Echtzeit auf unerwartete Situationen zu reagieren. Aktuelle Raumschiffe verwenden oft veraltete Hardware, da moderne Chips der Weltraumstrahlung nur schwer standhalten, was einen Engpass bei der Datenverarbeitung darstellt.<br><br>Die Ingenieure des JPL unterzogen den Chip strengen Tests, darunter Tests auf Temperaturschocks und elektromagnetische St\u00f6rungen. Ihr Fokus lag auf der Simulation von Planetenlandungen, bei denen Sensoren riesige Datenmengen in Sekundenschnelle verarbeiten m\u00fcssen. Jim Butler, Projektleiter am JPL, erkl\u00e4rte, dass sie Hardware testeten, die die n\u00e4chsten gro\u00dfen Schritte der NASA erm\u00f6glichen werde.<br><br>Microchip Technology, das 2022 als Partner ausgew\u00e4hlt wurde, hat gemeinsam mit der NASA eigene Ressourcen in die Entwicklung investiert. Nach der Zertifizierung wird der Prozessor in Orbitern, Rovern und Wohnmodulen zum Einsatz kommen.
