Israel has unveiled its first operational high-power laser defense system, marking a significant step in its strategy to protect against air threats. The Iron Beam system, which has a power output of 100 kilowatts, was developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and delivered to the Israeli Air Force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Iron Beam will complement a multi-layered defense network that already includes Iron Dome, David's Sling and Arrow missile interceptors. Unlike conventional systems, the laser uses electricity instead of expensive missiles, meaning each shot costs just a few cents, while missile interceptors cost between an estimated \u20ac9,000 and \u20ac91,000 per launch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recent tests have shown the system successfully destroying missiles, mortar shells and drones in conditions that mimic real battlefields. Officials emphasize that the laser is designed for smaller, low-flying targets that often escape radar, while missile interceptors will be designed for larger threats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Defense Ministry officials described the demonstration as a transition from prototype to mass production, as the system promises lower costs and wider coverage. The system, also known as Or Eitan (\u201cEitan\u2019s Light\u201d), is named in memory of Captain Eitan Oster, who fell in 2024.
