I have been using it since August last year. Linux<\/a>, I haven't relied on the Google app store for a few years now (because my Huawei phone<\/a> doesn't support it), I'm also currently trying out ProtonMail as an alternative to Gmail and Outlook<\/a>These are my experiments (Linux, for example, went from being an experiment to becoming my primary operating system) to separate myself from the Americans and other superpowers who can decide to change their terms of use at any time and I am powerless in doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am constantly amazed at how little European digital infrastructure there is. I pay with a card powered by an American company. I write documents in programs developed outside Europe. I communicate through applications whose servers are often on the other side of the Atlantic. This is no coincidence, but the result of decades of technological development in which Europe has not been a leading force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last few years, and especially in the last year, this has been changing. The European Union has begun to systematically build alternatives that would reduce its dependence on American and other global technology players. This is not a single project or a single strategy, but a broader shift, often referred to as digital sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which projects are already underway, where are the biggest challenges?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is Europe even talking about independence?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When I look at the bigger picture, it's clear that the reason is not just technological. It's a combination of geopolitics, economics, and security. Europe has spent decades building its digital infrastructure on American solutions, from operating systems to cloud services. That in itself isn't a problem until the world starts to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, however, it is increasingly clear that digital dependency also means a loss of control. European data often leaves the area that the EU can control, raising questions about security, surveillance and privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To translate this into more practical language, when I pay with a card or use a certain app, the data about what I do is often no longer under European control. This is becoming a strategic problem, not just a technical one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The end of the Visa and Mastercard monopoly?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of this transformation lies the realization that whoever controls data and payment flows controls the fate of citizens. For years, we have been trapped in the grip of corporations like Visa and Mastercard. Every transaction made by a European passes through American hubs, which means not only a drain on fees, but also strategic vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If geopolitical tensions were to escalate further, a foreign entity could theoretically paralyze the European economy with a single click. That's why the Wero project, powered by the European Payments Initiative, reached its key milestone this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see this system already widely used in Belgium, France and Germany for instant payments between individuals, and now it is rapidly expanding into stores and e-commerce. With the integration of the Dutch iDEAL system, Wero has become a serious European player, ensuring that money stays within the European banking ecosystem without leaving our borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I find interesting is that Wero is not built from scratch, but is based on the existing SEPA instant payments infrastructure. This means that Europe is not trying to invent a new technology, but to optimize what it already has. From a speed perspective, this is good because it means we won't have to wait years for an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, there is the EuroPA initiative, which connects national systems such as Bizum, iDEAL or MB Way into a single European ecosystem. This is an important step, as fragmentation has been one of the biggest weaknesses of European solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe is not necessarily trying to \u201creplace\u201d Visa or Mastercard, but to create an alternative that would work within its legal and economic space. Whether this will succeed is still an open question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 You've probably heard of the digital euro.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another important project is the digital euro. It is an initiative of the European Central Bank that aims to create a digital form of central bank money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, this seems similar to cryptocurrencies, but in reality it is quite different. The digital euro would be directly backed by a central bank, which means greater stability and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What interests me most about this project is its role in the wider ecosystem. The digital euro is not only a new form of money, but also a platform that could replace some of the functionality of card systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If implemented successfully, Europe could have its own payment system that would operate independently of American companies. However, implementation is complex and politically sensitive, so progress has been slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Digital Identity (eIDAS 2.0) will become mandatory by the end of this year in the form of digital wallets that all member states will have to issue. This will allow citizens across the EU to identify themselves, sign documents and access services without the help of Google or Apple login buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linux and open source alternatives to Microsoft<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you want to become independent, you first have to "get rid" of Microsoft. Windows and Office are probably the most widely used products, both in households and especially in public institutions and other work environments. But changes are already happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some European institutions and countries are choosing to switch to open source solutions such as Linux and platforms such as Nextcloud. This is not a single EU-wide project, but rather a collection of local initiatives. For example, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein and some Austrian institutions have started to abandon Microsoft solutions in favor of Linux and LibreOffice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their success has triggered an avalanche. The European Commission recently awarded large contracts for sovereign cloud services to consortia led by companies such as OVHCloud, Scaleway and Germany's STACKIT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is clear: European public data should no longer be hosted on the servers of companies that are subject to the US Cloud Act, which allows US authorities to access data regardless of where in the world it is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternative to WhatsApp and communication sovereignty<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Communication platforms are another example where Europe is heavily dependent on foreign companies. WhatsApp, Messenger<\/a> and similar applications are globally dominant, with almost no European alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, there are attempts. One approach is based on open standards, such as Matrix, which I briefly mentioned as alternative to Discord<\/a>, and which enables decentralized communication. This model means that users are not tied to a single provider, but can use different servers within the same network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belgian government was among the first to completely migrate its internal communications to this decentralized standard. Unlike WhatsApp, where you are locked into their walled garden, Matrix allows for interoperability. This means that different European institutions and even citizens can communicate via different providers, all speaking the same language, without any one company having a monopoly on the entire network. Element, as the most famous application on this protocol, is becoming the European answer to the question of secure and sovereign messaging that no foreign power can shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European institutions and some countries are also experimenting with their own communication platforms for public administration. The aim of these projects is primarily to protect sensitive data, not necessarily to compete with commercial applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest problem with Matrix (and Element) is its ease of use. It's not the same as WhatsApp, where you just install the app, connect your number, and start chatting. However, there's more work involved in the initial setup, which could put off the average user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have quite a few alternatives to Office<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The same goes for office tools. Microsoft Office is the de facto standard, but Europe is trying to develop alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nextcloud Hub is one of the more interesting solutions, as it combines documents, communication and collaboration in one platform. In addition, there are projects such as Euro-Office (uniting Nextcloud, IONOS, OnlyOffice) that aim to create a fully European ecosystem for office work based on open standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see European companies, fearful of industrial espionage, slowly switching to these solutions. It's not just that they're free or cheaper (often they're not), but that companies finally know where their data is and who has the encryption keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I notice about these projects is that they are not necessarily worse than existing solutions. The problem is more in the ecosystem and user habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cloud and data infrastructure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although less talked about, the cloud is probably the most important area of digital sovereignty. Most European companies use services such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe is trying to develop its own alternatives, but this is where the gap is greatest. American companies have a huge advantage in scale, investment and innovation. However, there are initiatives to develop European cloud solutions that would comply with European regulations and provide greater control over data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an area where the future of European digital sovereignty is likely to be decided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe understands the situation it finds itself in, but the problem is implementation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When I look at all these projects together, I get a rather mixed picture. On the one hand, it is clear that Europe understands the problem and is actively working on solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, the challenges are enormous. Fragmentation, divergent national interests, and slow political processes often slow progress. Moreover, American companies are not sitting idly by. While Europe develops alternatives, global players continue to innovate and expand their influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest challenge these projects face is not technology, but human persistence. People are used to certain interfaces, to a certain logic of operation. The transition from Outlook to the European alternative requires time and education. However, the budget that the Union is now investing in these transitions is astronomical. The call for a sovereign cloud worth 180 million euros is just the tip of the iceberg. The real power lies in legislation such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which forces large platforms to be open, which gives European alternatives the chance to survive and grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IRIS project is an alternative to Stalinko<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Looking further into the future, in the plans currently on the Commissioners' desks, we see the IRIS\u00b2 project. This is Europe's answer to Elon Musk's Starlink. Europe is building its own constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit to provide secure and independent connectivity for the military, government services and critical infrastructure. According to the latest information, negotiations with industrial partners such as Airbus and Thales have finally broken the deadlock. The first test satellites are expected to fly this year. Without our own space internet, all our efforts for software sovereignty would be in vain, as we would still be dependent on foreign hardware in orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where is Europe heading next?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Europe will not replace Visa, Microsoft or WhatsApp overnight. But it is building an infrastructure that allows it greater flexibility and independence. This means that in the future it will be possible to choose from different solutions, rather than being dependent on a single one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps that is the essence of the whole story. Not complete independence, but the possibility of choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectively speaking, Europe is still lagging behind in the field of artificial intelligence<\/a> in terms of raw processing power and capital, but it is building something unique in the areas of infrastructure, payments and sovereign clouds.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
