Sometimes it happens that a forgotten name rises like a phoenix from the ashes. Some simply because of nostalgia, others because behind the old brand lies an attempt at a new beginning. Commodore is one of those names that holds a special place in computer history. For many users, it was not just a computer manufacturer, but the first contact with home computing, programming, games and the feeling that technology is not reserved only for the largest companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now Commodore is making a comeback, and it's back in the mobile phone market. Not with a regular smartphone that tries to compete with the most powerful iPhones, Samsungs, or Xiaomis, but with a device that goes in a different direction. The Commodore Callback 8020 is a flip phone designed for users who want less digital noise, fewer constant notifications, and more control over what their phone does with their time and data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commodore has chosen Sailfish OS, a European mobile operating system from Finnish company Jolla, as its software base, which will also launch its Jolla Phone very soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Commodore Callback 8020 is presented as a phone for more relaxed use. Its philosophy is not to offer the user as many applications, as much content and as many ways to spend time in front of the screen as possible. Quite the opposite. The phone is said to be designed as a response to the culture of constant accessibility and endless scrolling through content and notifications that accompany the user from morning to night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Commodore, the device will block social networks and web browsers at the system level. This approach is not accidental. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in so-called dumb or minimalist phones that allow users to make calls, send messages, basic navigation and some essential functions, but without the constant pressure of application ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why Sailfish OS?<\/strong> Jolla is a Finnish company founded in 2011 by former Nokia engineers. Their Sailfish OS operating system is based on the legacy of MeeGo, a platform that was once one of the most interesting alternatives to Android and iOS, but never really caught on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sailfish OS differs from Android and iOS primarily in its focus on privacy, European origins, and a different user interface. Jolla has been developing it for over a decade as an alternative to a market dominated by two major platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Commodore, privacy was clearly one of the main reasons for the choice. The company emphasizes in the statement that the user's data should remain theirs and that the phone should not be based on the logic of exploiting attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When bringing back historic brands, there's always the risk that the product lives on in memory. Commodore has a strong name, but nostalgia alone isn't enough these days. Users can enjoy the logo, retro inspiration, and references to computing history, but the device needs to have a clear purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Commodore Callback 8020 doesn't want to be the most powerful phone. It doesn't want to have the best cameras. It doesn't want to compete with 120Hz screens, cloud-based AI, and apps for every possible habit. Its ambition is to offer the user a phone that allows basic connectivity without constantly dragging them back to the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The partnership between Commodore and Jolla also has broader implications. The mobile market has long been divided between Android and iOS. There have been many attempts at a third path, but most have failed. Windows Phone, BlackBerry 10, Firefox OS, Ubuntu Touch, and others have shown how difficult it is to build a mobile ecosystem when users, developers, and services are already tied to two major platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sailfish OS is one of the few alternatives that has remained around despite its niche role. That doesn't mean it can compete with Android or iOS overnight, but it does mean that there is a technological basis for devices that don't want to play by the same rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jolla and Commodore will launch the partnership on July 8, 2026 in Helsinki. At the same event, Jolla will also begin shipping its new European smartphone, the Jolla Phone.
