4K resolution is most useful when zooming in<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nEach camera captures images in a maximum resolution of 3840 \u00d7 2160 pixels. A lens with a focal length of four millimeters is installed, which offers a wide enough view for an entrance, a larger interior passage or the area in front of a balcony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This isn't an extremely wide-angle lens that can capture an entire house from a single point, but it has a wide enough field of view to cover a larger area with careful placement without the image being excessively curved at the edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The biggest advantage of 4K resolution is in post-processing. If I want to check a small detail, I can zoom in on a part of the image much more than with a classic 1080p camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the entrance, this is useful for inspecting a person or object, and with a camera on the balcony, for what is happening in the yard or nearby parking spaces. High resolution is also useful indoors, as one camera can cover a larger area while still retaining enough detail when inspecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More pixels, of course, can't fix misalignment. If the face is too far away, at an awkward angle, or obscured by strong light, even 4K resolution won't make up for the details the camera missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, the position of the camera is still more important than the number on the packaging itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n4K doesn't mean 30 frames per second either<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThere is an important limitation to note with the 4K label. In 50Hz mode, cameras record at full resolution at a maximum of 12.5 frames per second. In 60Hz mode, the limit is 15 frames per second. At lower resolutions, they can reach up to 20 frames per second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The footage is therefore not as smooth as 25, 30 or 60 frames per second video. For normal surveillance of an entrance, interior passage or parked car, this is not a big problem. The system is mainly intended for recording events and identifying details, not for recording cinematically smooth video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The difference becomes more noticeable with fast movement. A person running quickly through a room will not be captured as smoothly as with a camera with a higher frame rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I prioritized the detail of 4K resolution in my setup. The entrance, balcony, and interior passageways are mostly areas where people move at normal speeds, so the lower frame rate wasn't a major drawback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three night monitoring modes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe cameras have infrared and white auxiliary lighting. I can choose between classic infrared mode, constant white lighting and smart dual mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In smart mode, the camera uses infrared light most of the time and displays a black and white image. When it detects a person or vehicle, it can turn on the white light and attempt to capture the event in color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I find this method particularly useful at the entrance and on the balcony. Most of the night the camera does not illuminate the surroundings with visible light, but during an important event the white light helps to show the color of clothing, an object or a vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
White light also has a deterrent effect. A person can quickly notice that they have been detected. On the other hand, turning on the light too often can disturb residents or neighbors, so it is important to correctly determine the detection area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For indoor cameras, additional white lighting is usually not needed. There I could use the classic infrared mode or rely on the existing indoor lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lens cleanliness is also very important for night vision. A cobweb, droplets, or an insect right in front of the camera can strongly reflect infrared light and create large bright spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People and vehicle detection reduces false alarms<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nTypically, motion detection reacts to almost any change in the image. It can be triggered by a shadow, a moving branch, rain, an insect in front of the lens, or a sudden change in lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the phone sends an alert for every such event, the user quickly starts to ignore the notifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ANNKE H800 supports separate recognition of people and vehicles. The system tries to determine what is actually moving, thus reducing the number of alerts for minor events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the entrance, I wanted alerts primarily when a person was detected. On the balcony or in an area overlooking the parking spaces, both categories make sense. Inside, I was primarily interested in detecting people at times when there should be no one in the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Customizable detection areas are also very useful. A camera on a balcony can cover part of the yard, parking spaces, and the surrounding area. If the entire image area were active, the system could often alert you to events that have no direct connection to the object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By limiting detection to important areas, alerts become much more useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recognition is not foolproof. In bad weather, an unusual angle, or a partially obscured person, misclassification can occur. However, distinguishing between people, vehicles, and normal motion is a major improvement over basic image change detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Continuous recording or just events?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nANNKE H800 allows continuous recording, event recording, or a combination of both. I can customize the schedule for each camera and time of day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Continuous recording ensures that I don't miss anything. The downside is that it takes up more disk space and takes longer to review the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Event-only recording uses significantly less space, but it depends on the detection working properly. If the sensitivity is too low or the event occurs outside the designated area, the system may not save the recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the entrance and balcony, I think a combination of continuous recording and tagging of detected people and vehicles makes sense. This way, I have the entire course of the event available, and smart tags help with quick searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With indoor cameras, I can use a schedule. Continuous recording makes the most sense when the house is empty, while I can limit or turn it off during normal occupancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The system uses H.265+ compression, which reduces the amount of data. The actual length of the archive depends on the size of the installed disk, number of cameras, bitrate, resolution, schedule and amount of movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NVR has one SATA drive slot. Individual cameras also have a microSD card slot, which can serve as additional or backup local storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The big advantage is that I don't need a monthly cloud subscription for basic local recording. The recordings stay on my recorder. This gives me more control over the data, but at the same time I have to take care of the security of the disk and the recorder myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\nRemote access via phone<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nFor remote monitoring, the ANNKE Vision app is available. The recorder must be connected to the router, then I add it to the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I can check the live image, open an individual camera, and search for saved events via my phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of the time I don't need four full resolution streams at once. For a quick review, a secondary stream in lower quality is more suitable as it loads faster and uses less mobile data. When I want to check the detail, I open an individual camera in higher resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remote access is one of the most practical features of the entire system. I can check who is at the entrance, whether everything is quiet inside, what is happening on the balcony, and whether there is anything unusual in the yard or near the parking spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I set a strong and unique administrator password. A video surveillance system protects the house, but if poorly protected, it can itself become a security risk. It also makes sense to regularly check for updates and only allow access to users who actually need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cameras also capture sound<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe cameras have a built-in microphone. Audio recording can be turned on or off in the settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sound can help to understand an event. An image shows a person at the entrance, and sound can explain whether it is a delivery, a visit, or something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the other hand, recording audio is often more sensitive than video from a privacy perspective. This is especially true for indoor cameras. So I thought carefully about where audio capture is actually necessary and where it is more appropriate to turn it off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cameras have a microphone to capture audio, but they don't have a built-in speaker for true two-way communication. So I can't talk to the visitor through them like I can through a classic smart video doorbell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Privacy is especially important with indoor cameras<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe ANNKE H800 allows you to create privacy masks to cover the part of the image that you don't want to record. This is useful if a neighboring plot, window, public area, or part of the space that is not important for securing the object appears in the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the outdoor setup, I aimed the cameras to primarily monitor the entrance, balcony, courtyard, and other areas connected to the building. There's no need to unnecessarily film the wider surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With indoor cameras, privacy is even more important. I installed them in places with great coverage, but in such a way that their main purpose remains to monitor the entrances and not to monitor the daily activities of the residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That's why I don't post live footage in the test. Posting a recording online is something completely different than privately reviewing the event on your own recorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weather resistance of outdoor cameras<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe cameras have IP67 protection and are also designed for outdoor use. They can withstand rain, dust and a fairly wide range of temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, I tried to place the cameras at the entrance and on the balcony in at least partially protected locations. An overhang or balcony can reduce direct exposure to the heaviest rainfall and sun, but they should not extend into the viewing angle or reflect infrared light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I paid special attention to the cable connections. The camera housing may be waterproof, but a poorly protected connector is not. The connection must be adequately protected from moisture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four free channels allow for later upgrades<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe recorder has eight PoE ports, but I only used four. This way I can expand the system later without replacing the central unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a three-story house, there are certainly locations where an additional camera would be useful. One could cover the other side of the building, another additional exterior access, a third a staircase or a space not covered by the current layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The system also supports the ONVIF standard and RTSP protocol, so it is not completely closed to its own ecosystem. More advanced users can connect it to compatible software, a home server, or certain cameras from other manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adding third-party cameras can be more challenging than connecting an original ANNKE camera, as it sometimes requires manually setting the IP address, username, password, and protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhat bothered me about the system?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe biggest obstacle is physical installation. PoE greatly simplifies connecting individual cameras, but it cannot eliminate the need for cabling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a two-story apartment, the experimental setup was relatively simple. In a three-story house, however, much more thought had to be given to the transitions between floors, cable lengths, and the position of the recorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another limitation is the recording speed at full resolution. The 4K image is detailed, but the 12.5 and 15 frames per second aren't particularly smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recorder's user interface could also be friendlier and more modern. It offers a lot of options, but it can be confusing for a beginner. Without my preliminary test run, the final setup would probably have taken longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I also missed two-way audio. The built-in microphone is useful, but a speaker on the camera at the entrance would have made it possible to talk to a visitor or delivery person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The recorder only has one hard drive slot. For home use, this is usually enough, but more demanding users may want the option of installing two drives or additional data mirroring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trial run paid off<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nThe ANNKE H800 is a very different product from a battery-powered camera that I can put on a shelf and connect to a wireless network in a few minutes. Its installation requires planning, cabling, and a bit more technical knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That's why the decision to test the system at home first turned out to be a good one. In a two-story apartment, I was able to test the operation of all the cameras without pressure, learn how to use the recorder and the app, and set up recording and detection correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When I moved the system into the three-story birth house, I already knew exactly what I was doing. Instead of dealing with basic settings, I could focus on positioning the cameras and getting the most meaningful coverage of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The camera at the entrance monitors the main access point. Two interior cameras monitor important passages and offer extensive coverage of the multi-storey building. The camera on the balcony protects an access point that might not be chosen by every intruder, but a brave enough person would not necessarily miss. It also allows for a view of part of the courtyard and nearby parking spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4K resolution offers enough detail for later zooming, and smart night lighting combines discreet infrared monitoring with the option of color recording when an event is detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Human and vehicle detection along with configurable zones reduce the number of irrelevant alerts. Local recording means I don't need a monthly subscription for basic use, and the eight-slot recorder leaves room for additional cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The system is not without its compromises. Recording in 4K isn't particularly smooth, the user interface takes some getting used to, and running cables across three floors is no small project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
