USB 2.0 reaches a maximum speed of 480 Mb/s, while the latest USB4 can transfer data at 80 Gb/s and, in a special asymmetric configuration, even up to 120 Gb/s in one direction.

However, the development was not uniform. Some generations brought a lot to users, others were mainly technical in-between periods, and some were more noticeable as a new name than an actual change.

If we were to rank the individual steps in the development of USB according to how much they actually changed the use of devices, the scale would be quite different from a simple sequence of numbers.

USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.2 Gen 1 – new names, same speed

The least exciting part of USB's evolution was the period when the standard was mostly changing names. The original USB 3.0 with a speed of 5 Gb/s became USB 3.1 Gen 1 and later USB 3.2 Gen 1. For the user, practically nothing happened. The speed remained 5 Gb/s. The confusion became even greater because when USB 3.2 was introduced, the standard combined three different performance classes under the same name: 5, 10 and 20 Gb/s. The USB-IF (the organization responsible for the development, standardization and promotion of the USB standard) therefore later began to encourage manufacturers to clearly state the actual performance on their products, for example USB 5Gbps, USB 10Gbps or USB 20Gbps.

If a user swapped out a USB 3.0 device for one labeled USB 3.2 Gen 1 and expected faster transfers, they got nothing. It was one of the least user-friendly episodes in the history of the USB standard.

USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 is a very fast standard that the market almost skipped

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 was much more interesting on paper. It used two 10-gigabit connections and increased the total capacity to 20 Gb/s, which is enough for very fast external SSDs. The USB-IF designed USB 3.2 so that USB-C could use multiple data lanes at once.

The problem was elsewhere. Support remained quite limited. Many laptops have directly switched from 10 Gbps to Thunderbolt or USB4. Even if a user buys a 20-gigabit external SSD, the USB-C connector itself does not guarantee that they will get those 20 Gbps at all. That's why USB 20Gbps is a somewhat unusual intermediate step today. It is very useful technologically, but it never became as universal as one would expect given its performance.

USB 1.x – slow, but without it, today's USB wouldn't exist

Let's go back to the beginning. The first versions of USB are almost laughably slow today. USB offered 1.5 Mbps for slower devices and 12 Mbps in Full-Speed mode. But speeds weren't really the point with the first USB. Its most important job was to simplify the chaos of connectors on computers.

Before USB, there were the usual serial ports, parallel ports for printers, PS/2 for mice and keyboards, and various proprietary ports. USB introduced a much more universal way of connecting devices and, above all, the concept of plug and play. From today's perspective, 12 Mbps is not much value, but historically, the first USB was the foundation of the change that later enabled almost everything we connect to a computer today.

USB 3.1 Gen 2 – 10 Gb/s is still very useful today

When the speed increased from 5 to 10 Gb/s, the difference became tangible. The theoretical limit of a 10-gigabit connection is 1.25 Gb/s, but real-world transfers with good external SSDs can approach about one gigabyte per second. This is still a very useful class of USB.

For an external SSD, photo archive, backups, or transferring tens of gigabytes of video, a speed of 10 Gb/s is often more than enough for the average user. If an external SSD can handle around 1000 MB/s (or 1 GB/s), it can transfer 100 GB of data in less than two minutes under ideal conditions.

USB 3.0 – the moment when USB was no longer just for peripherals

The leap from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 was huge. The maximum theoretical speed increased from 480 Mb/s to 5 Gb/s, more than tenfold. This was the period when external drives, fast USB sticks and other devices first got a connection that did not slow them down so obviously. With USB 2.0, the actual transfer of an external drive was often limited to a few tens of MB/s. USB 3.0, on the other hand, theoretically enabled 625 MB/s and later became fast enough even for the first generations of external SSDs.

Backward compatibility was also important. An old USB 2.0 device could still be plugged into a newer USB 3.0 port, and the connection would simply adapt to the slowest link.

USB4 – USB also becomes a connection for displays, PCIe, and docking stations

USB4 is much more than just the next speed bump. Its architecture is based on Thunderbolt technology, which Intel made available for development of the standard, and USB4 can dynamically carry multiple types of traffic over the same connection. That means data, DisplayPort video, and in appropriate implementations, PCIe traffic. Bandwidth can be dynamically allocated between them based on the needs of the device.

The first versions of USB4 allowed for 20 and 40 Gb/s respectively. USB4 version 2.0 raised the limit to 80 Gb/s, and for certain applications with very high requirements in one direction, especially displays, an asymmetric connection with 120 Gb/s in one direction and 40 Gb/s in the other direction is possible. USB4 remains backward compatible with previous versions of USB. This already enables very powerful docking stations, fast NVMe SSDs, multiple high-resolution displays and other devices connected via a single cable.

But USB4 still has one problem. The USB-C designation doesn't say what the connector actually does. The USB-IF explicitly warns that USB-C is not the same as USB 3.2 or USB4. USB-C describes a physical connector. A manufacturer can implement USB 2.0, USB 3.2, USB4, Power Delivery, or various combinations of these technologies on it.

This means that two seemingly identical USB-C ports can offer 480 Mbps or 80 Gbps, respectively.

USB 2.0 is the generation that turned USB into a universal standard

No, we haven't forgotten about USB 2.0. If we were to look at the specifications alone, USB4 should have won. But if we were to assess the impact on everyday use, USB 2.0 has a legacy that is hard to beat. It was introduced in 2000 and increased the speed from 12 to 480 Mbps, about forty times. It was a leap that transformed USB from a connector mainly for keyboards, mice and similar devices into a practical interface for external drives, USB sticks, printers, optical drives, cameras, music devices and even network interfaces.

Even more impressively, USB 2.0 hasn't disappeared. A quarter of a century later, it's still found in new devices. A keyboard, mouse, or controller often doesn't need hundreds of gigabits of data transfer, so 480 Mbps is still plenty. There are even USB-C cables and devices that physically use the modern connector, but remain USB 2.0 in terms of data. The USB-IF explicitly allows for this option.

USB-C may be the biggest change, but it's not a generation of USB

It would be almost impossible to ignore USB-C in the history of USB, even though it technically doesn't belong on the generation scale. Previous connectors had a clearly defined orientation. USB-C eliminated that, while also making the same physical connector flexible enough to fit phones, laptops, monitors, external SSDs, docks, and chargers.

With USB Power Delivery, its role has become even greater. Today's USB PD specification can provide up to 240 W of power via a suitable USB-C cable, while before the introduction of Extended Power Range the limit was 100 W. This means that USB-C is no longer just for charging phones, but can also power quite powerful gaming laptops and other devices.

But the very flexibility of the USB-C connector has created a new problem. A cable that looks the same as another may only support USB 2.0, may be capable of 80 Gbps, may support 60 W or 240 W charging, may or may not transmit images.

That's why we have to be extra careful when buying a cable these days. Otherwise, we'll end up charging our phone with half the power it actually has, or the cable won't be able to transfer data at all.

Fast data transfer doesn't mean fast charging

One of the most common misconceptions about USB-C is that a powerful data port automatically means a high charging power. In reality, the data portion and USB Power Delivery for power delivery are two separate things. USB-C primarily defines the physical port, and the manufacturer then decides which data standards and power it will actually support over it.

Therefore, we can have a USB-C cable that only transfers data at USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps, but also supports USB Power Delivery. Conversely, we can have a high-speed data cable where the power is limited depending on the cable, charger or device. The USB-IF explicitly emphasizes that the terms USB-C, USB4 and USB Power Delivery are not synonymous and that the shape of the connector itself does not provide any of these functions.

USB Power Delivery has come a long way, however. USB PD 3.1 has expanded the previous 100W limit to 240W. The Extended Power Range system introduced higher voltages of 28, 36, and 48V, allowing for 140, 180, and a maximum of 240W charging, respectively.

USB-C is no longer just a connector for phones and thin ultrabooks. Up to 240 W is enough power for quite powerful laptops, monitors, docking stations and other devices that just a few years ago absolutely needed their own power supply.

However, the cable is again confusing. For higher power, the cable must meet the appropriate requirements and correctly communicate its capabilities via an electronic label or E-marker. USB-IF also provides for the labeling of certified USB-C cables with their power, today mainly 60 W or 240 W, so that the user can more easily know what he has bought.

In practice, this means that you could have two seemingly identical USB-C cables lying around on your desk. The first might be a slow USB 2.0 data cable, but good enough to charge your laptop. The second might provide very fast USB4 transfer and high power. The third might support fast transfer, but not maximum power.

USB4 or Thunderbolt? What's the difference?

USB4 and Thunderbolt are so closely related these days that it's easy to confuse them. Intel contributed the Thunderbolt protocol specification as one of the foundations for the development of USB4, so USB4 uses a very similar architecture and can carry a variety of traffic types over a single connection, including USB data, DisplayPort, and PCI Express.

But USB4 and Thunderbolt are not the same certification. The biggest difference is how much of what is actually guaranteed by a particular label. USB4 is a standard with different possible capabilities and implementations. For example, a device can support different data rates, and the manufacturer must clearly state what a particular connector is capable of.

Thunderbolt, on the other hand, is a more tightly defined feature set that is certified by Intel. Therefore, with a certified Thunderbolt connector, the user typically gets a more predictable combination of data, video, and PCIe connectivity.

For example, Thunderbolt 4 had a maximum data transfer rate of 40 Gbps, but Intel also set minimum requirements for certain connector capabilities. Thunderbolt 5 has raised the bar considerably. It provides 80 Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth, and for demanding video traffic, Bandwidth Boost can direct three connection channels in one direction, achieving up to 120 Gbps in one direction and 40 Gbps in the other. Thunderbolt 5 is also based on USB4 v2, DisplayPort 2.1, and PCIe Gen 4.

Interestingly, the development of USB4 has come to very similar numbers. USB4 version 2.0 allows for operation at 80 Gb/s, and its architecture supports very flexible allocation of data and display bandwidth.

The best USB isn't necessarily the newest

One of the biggest features of USB is that a newer generation doesn't mean that an older one is completely useless. For a keyboard, USB 2.0 is still sufficient. For a regular external SSD, USB 10Gbps is often quite suitable. If you're connecting a fast NVMe SSD, multiple monitors, and a network via a single docking station, USB4 40Gbps or 80Gbps becomes significantly more interesting.

USB has advanced from 1.5 Mbps to 80 Gbps in nearly three decades, but its greatest triumph wasn't just speed. The key was the ability for new generations to largely remain connected to the old.

If we had to choose the most important generation in terms of impact, USB 2.0 would still take the crown. USB 3.0 made external storage really fast, and USB4 is transforming USB into a universal connection for data, displays, docking, and power today.

Toda pod enakim logotipom USB se danes skrivajo povezave, katerih zmogljivost se lahko razlikuje tudi za več razredov.
