El prototipo, creado en la Universidad de Ciencia y Tecnolog\u00eda del Sur (SUST), utiliza cadenas de ADN sint\u00e9tico impresas en una fina pel\u00edcula de pl\u00e1stico, que posteriormente se enrolla en una cinta y se desplaza entre bobinas.<br><br>El sistema puede almacenar hasta 36 petabytes de datos, o aproximadamente un mill\u00f3n de gigabytes, suficiente para m\u00e1s de tres mil millones de canciones. Los archivos digitales se convierten en secuencias de ADN (A, T, C, G), que reemplazan los ceros y unos binarios. Cada tira contiene aproximadamente 550.000 secciones, donde las \u00e1reas blancas absorben la soluci\u00f3n de ADN y las l\u00edneas negras impiden su propagaci\u00f3n. El esc\u00e1ner puede reconocer unas 1.570 posiciones por segundo.<br><br>El sistema permite leer, reescribir y borrar datos. Las cadenas de ADN se pueden secuenciar varias veces sin p\u00e9rdida, y las enzimas pueden extraer y reemplazar datos con una precisi\u00f3n cercana al 99,9 %. Para su protecci\u00f3n, las secciones est\u00e1n recubiertas con una capa cristalina de estructuras metalorg\u00e1nicas que bloquea el agua y las enzimas. Esto permite que el ADN se conserve durante siglos a temperatura ambiente, e incluso decenas de miles de a\u00f1os en entornos m\u00e1s fr\u00edos.<br><br>Aunque el casete ofrece una enorme capacidad, es lento en comparaci\u00f3n con los dispositivos de almacenamiento convencionales. Copiar archivos peque\u00f1os toma varios minutos, y la s\u00edntesis de ADN sigue siendo costosa.
