A diferencia de las bater\u00edas convencionales, esta innovaci\u00f3n no solo almacena energ\u00eda, sino que tambi\u00e9n forma parte de la estructura f\u00edsica de un veh\u00edculo o dispositivo.<br><br>Las bater\u00edas estructurales se denominan a menudo \u00abalmacenamiento de energ\u00eda sin masa\u00bb porque se integran directamente en la carrocer\u00eda de un coche, una aeronave o incluso un dispositivo electr\u00f3nico. Esto reduce el peso total a la vez que aumenta la resistencia de la estructura. Investigadores de la Universidad Tecnol\u00f3gica de Chalmers y el Real Instituto de Tecnolog\u00eda de Suecia han demostrado c\u00f3mo su \u00faltimo dise\u00f1o logra resultados r\u00e9cord.<br><br>La bater\u00eda se fabric\u00f3 insertando fibras de vidrio entre los electrodos, a\u00f1adiendo un electrolito polim\u00e9rico y endureciendo la celda en un horno. El resultado es una bater\u00eda plana que conduce bien la electricidad y soporta cargas mec\u00e1nicas en todas las direcciones.<br><br>El prototipo alcanza actualmente una densidad energ\u00e9tica de 24 Wh\/kg, lo que representa aproximadamente el 20 % de la capacidad de las bater\u00edas de iones de litio actuales, pero con una seguridad significativamente mayor y una rigidez de 25 GPa. Al ser los veh\u00edculos m\u00e1s ligeros, requieren menos energ\u00eda para su conducci\u00f3n, lo que compensa la menor densidad.<br><br>Los pr\u00f3ximos pasos incluyen reemplazar el aluminio por fibra de carbono y reducir el grosor del separador. Esto podr\u00eda permitir que la bater\u00eda alcance 75 Wh\/kg y una rigidez de 75 GPa, equipar\u00e1ndola a la de muchos materiales de construcci\u00f3n y almacenando m\u00e1s energ\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las aplicaciones no se limitan a los coches el\u00e9ctricos, sino tambi\u00e9n a bicicletas el\u00e9ctricas, sat\u00e9lites, ordenadores port\u00e1tiles y, sobre todo, a la aviaci\u00f3n, donde el peso es el mayor obst\u00e1culo para la electrificaci\u00f3n.
