Sin embargo, un nuevo estudio, publicado en la revista Nature Nanotechnology, revela que algunos monocristales pueden empezar a agrietarse desde dentro tras tan solo unos 100 ciclos de carga y descarga.<br><br>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 no es suficiente el n\u00edquel? La mayor\u00eda de los fabricantes de veh\u00edculos el\u00e9ctricos apuestan por c\u00e1todos con un alto contenido de n\u00edquel, ya que esto permite una mayor densidad energ\u00e9tica y una mayor autonom\u00eda. El problema surge a altos voltajes, cuando la eliminaci\u00f3n del litio debilita los enlaces de ox\u00edgeno en la estructura. Al formarse grietas, el electrolito l\u00edquido las penetra, desencadenando reacciones qu\u00edmicas indeseadas. Estas reacciones no solo reducen la capacidad, sino que tambi\u00e9n aumentan el calentamiento y, por lo tanto, el riesgo de incendio.<br><br>El equipo de investigaci\u00f3n, dirigido por el Dr. Jing Wang, incluso descubri\u00f3 que el problema no reside en las uniones, sino en el movimiento desigual de los iones de litio. Dentro de una part\u00edcula monocristalina, algunas regiones absorben el litio m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido que otras. Esto genera inconsistencias en la red cristalina:<br><br>\u2013 La superficie de la part\u00edcula cambia r\u00e1pidamente, mientras que el n\u00facleo queda rezagado.<br>\u2013 Cuando la expansi\u00f3n o contracci\u00f3n excede el l\u00edmite el\u00e1stico del material, el cristal se agrieta.<br>\u2013 La carga r\u00e1pida aumenta estos riesgos al obligar al litio a moverse a\u00fan m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido y de manera menos uniforme.<br><br>Aunque la industria intenta reducir el uso del costoso cobalto, las pruebas han demostrado que una peque\u00f1a cantidad de este elemento en monocristales resulta realmente \u00fatil. El cobalto suaviza el flujo de litio y reduce la formaci\u00f3n de zonas de alto voltaje. Por otro lado, el manganeso presente en estas muestras ralentiz\u00f3 las reacciones y aument\u00f3 la probabilidad de agrietamiento, a pesar de ser una alternativa m\u00e1s econ\u00f3mica y menos controvertida desde el punto de vista \u00e9tico.<br><br>Los cient\u00edficos se\u00f1alan ahora que el futuro de las bater\u00edas podr\u00eda no residir en maximizar la energ\u00eda, sino en garantizar reacciones uniformes en todo el material. El siguiente paso ser\u00e1 transferir estos conocimientos de las part\u00edculas de laboratorio a celdas de bater\u00eda completas que deber\u00e1n soportar condiciones de conducci\u00f3n reales.
