Si bien las grandes reservas de esta materia prima indican que no nos quedaremos sin ella a corto plazo, el litio sigue siendo un producto caro. A mediados de mayo de 2026, su precio rondaba los 23.850 euros por tonelada. Por otro lado, existen metales mucho m\u00e1s baratos, como el mineral de hierro, que cuesta poco m\u00e1s de 100 euros por tonelada y es una excelente base para bater\u00edas m\u00e1s econ\u00f3micas.<br><br>Cient\u00edficos del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n de Metales (IMR) de la Academia China de Ciencias han desarrollado una bater\u00eda de flujo especial &quot;totalmente de hierro&quot;. Seg\u00fan la investigaci\u00f3n, este nuevo sistema puede soportar 6000 ciclos de carga, lo que equivale a unos 16 a\u00f1os de uso diario, sin perder su capacidad original. En comparaci\u00f3n, una bater\u00eda t\u00edpica de iones de litio en un tel\u00e9fono inteligente soporta menos de 1000 ciclos, mientras que sistemas m\u00e1s grandes pueden alcanzar hasta 5000 ciclos.<br><br>Las bater\u00edas de flujo se diferencian de las bater\u00edas tradicionales en que sus elementos clave est\u00e1n sumergidos en un electrolito l\u00edquido. Investigadores chinos han utilizado un nuevo electrolito que impide eficazmente que los iones hidr\u00f3xido ataquen el n\u00facleo de hierro. Esta protecci\u00f3n del n\u00facleo resuelve los problemas de r\u00e1pida degradaci\u00f3n y corta vida \u00fatil que hab\u00edan afectado a todos los intentos similares anteriores.<br><br>Los investigadores informan que su bater\u00eda de hierro alcanz\u00f3 una eficiencia promedio del 99,4 % durante 6000 ciclos a una corriente de 80 mA\/cm\u00b2. Esta eficiencia mide la eficiencia de la transferencia de electrones entre los electrodos durante la carga. El dispositivo tambi\u00e9n tuvo un buen desempe\u00f1o a corrientes m\u00e1s altas, manteniendo una eficiencia del 78,5 % a 150 mA\/cm\u00b2. Los altos valores de esta eficiencia est\u00e1n directamente relacionados con una mayor vida \u00fatil, lo que confirma el enorme potencial de esta tecnolog\u00eda.<br><br>A pesar de los impresionantes resultados, no veremos estas bater\u00edas en dispositivos electr\u00f3nicos port\u00e1tiles.
