Esta tecnolog\u00eda est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ada para reducir la absorci\u00f3n de calor en los edificios, disminuyendo as\u00ed las temperaturas interiores y, por consiguiente, reduciendo considerablemente la necesidad de un sistema de aire acondicionado que consume mucha energ\u00eda. El recubrimiento se basa en un pol\u00edmero especialmente adaptado llamado PVDF-HFP, que contiene poros microsc\u00f3picos. Estos poros dispersan eficazmente los rayos solares e impiden que el material subyacente se caliente.<br><br>A diferencia de las cubiertas y fachadas convencionales, que absorben la energ\u00eda solar durante el d\u00eda y se calientan en exceso, este revestimiento funciona seg\u00fan el principio de refrigeraci\u00f3n radiante pasiva diurna. Esto significa que refleja la mayor parte de la luz y disipa el calor restante, alej\u00e1ndolo del edificio. Durante las pruebas de laboratorio y de campo, se comprob\u00f3 que las superficies revestidas eran hasta 25 \u00b0C m\u00e1s fr\u00edas que los techos oscuros y hasta 6 \u00b0C m\u00e1s fr\u00edas que el aire ambiente en las mismas condiciones. Si bien la pintura no puede sustituir por completo al aire acondicionado, puede contribuir significativamente a la reducci\u00f3n de los costes de electricidad en regiones con olas de calor prolongadas.<br><br>La caracter\u00edstica m\u00e1s singular de esta pintura inteligente es su capacidad para extraer agua de la humedad atmosf\u00e9rica. Al mantenerse la superficie m\u00e1s fr\u00eda que el aire circundante, el vapor de agua comienza a condensarse sobre ella. Todo el proceso se desarrolla de forma completamente natural, similar a la formaci\u00f3n del roc\u00edo matutino, y no requiere una fuente de energ\u00eda externa. Durante seis meses de pruebas en el tejado de un centro de nanotecnolog\u00eda en S\u00eddney, el revestimiento recolect\u00f3 humedad durante aproximadamente un tercio del a\u00f1o y, en condiciones favorables, produjo hasta 390 mililitros de agua por metro cuadrado de superficie al d\u00eda.<br><br>Los cient\u00edficos creen que la tecnolog\u00eda tambi\u00e9n tendr\u00e1 aplicaciones en otros \u00e1mbitos.
