Muchas regiones del mundo dependen de plantas desalinizadoras de agua de mar, pero los m\u00e9todos tradicionales, como la \u00f3smosis inversa y la destilaci\u00f3n t\u00e9rmica, son extremadamente costosos y consumen mucha energ\u00eda. Adem\u00e1s, requieren tratamiento qu\u00edmico y generan enormes cantidades de residuos de salmuera concentrada. Cuando este l\u00edquido salado se vierte de nuevo al mar, representa una grave amenaza para los ecosistemas marinos debido al aumento de la salinidad y la disminuci\u00f3n del ox\u00edgeno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un equipo de investigadores de la Universidad de Rochester, liderado por Chunlei Guo, profesor de \u00f3ptica y f\u00edsica, ha desarrollado un m\u00e9todo completamente innovador. Su sistema funciona con energ\u00eda solar, no requiere pretratamiento qu\u00edmico y no genera salmuera l\u00edquida. La tecnolog\u00eda se basa en paneles solares especialmente adaptados, fabricados con metal negro y tratados con l\u00e1seres de femtosegundos. Esta microestructura permite que la superficie absorba casi toda la luz solar y, al mismo tiempo, atraiga el agua. Los l\u00e1seres del panel crean una zona activa que atrae una fina capa de agua de mar a trav\u00e9s de la superficie. Cuando la luz solar calienta el metal, el agua se evapora y se lic\u00faa, convirti\u00e9ndose en agua potable limpia, mientras que las sales y los minerales disueltos se desplazan autom\u00e1ticamente hacia las zonas pasivas del panel, evitando as\u00ed la obstrucci\u00f3n del sistema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El avance clave reside en que el agua de mar real, adem\u00e1s de cloruro de sodio, contiene magnesio y calcio, que, al evaporarse, forman una costra dura y densa. Este proceso es similar a la acumulaci\u00f3n de sarro en un calentador de agua. Para evitarlo, los cient\u00edficos han creado surcos microsc\u00f3picos en el metal y han aprovechado un fen\u00f3meno f\u00edsico bien conocido: el efecto de la mancha de caf\u00e9. Cuando una gota de caf\u00e9 se seca, deja un anillo oscuro de part\u00edculas concentradas en los bordes. El sistema utiliza el mismo principio para desplazar la sal hacia los bordes. La tecnolog\u00eda se ha probado con \u00e9xito con agua de los oc\u00e9anos Pac\u00edfico, Atl\u00e1ntico e \u00cdndico, y la superficie se ha limpiado completamente por s\u00ed sola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En lugar de generar residuos l\u00edquidos peligrosos para el medio ambiente, este proceso elimina casi todas las sales en estado s\u00f3lido.
