A pesar de su uso generalizado, este material tiene un inconveniente importante: tiende a agrietarse con los golpes repentinos. Cient\u00edficos del MIT han demostrado que la resistencia de estos pol\u00edmeros y del caucho puede duplicarse mediante el uso de una mol\u00e9cula reticulante especial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los investigadores incorporaron intencionadamente enlaces debilitados, denominados mecan\u00f3foros, en la red polim\u00e9rica. Cuando el material se somete a una fuerza externa, estos enlaces se rompen de forma controlada en el punto de impacto. Esta acci\u00f3n abre v\u00edas para una mayor absorci\u00f3n de energ\u00eda y redirige la propagaci\u00f3n de grietas, mientras que los enlaces m\u00e1s fuertes que soportan la carga principal permanecen intactos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Para comprobar esta propiedad, los cient\u00edficos utilizaron un sistema especial. Dispararon microesferas de silicato de aproximadamente 0,001 cm de di\u00e1metro a una velocidad de 750 metros por segundo contra pel\u00edculas delgadas de poliestireno. Midiendo la velocidad de las part\u00edculas antes y despu\u00e9s de la perforaci\u00f3n, calcularon la cantidad de energ\u00eda retenida. Se observ\u00f3 que el material con mecan\u00f3foros reten\u00eda mucha m\u00e1s energ\u00eda que el poliestireno convencional. Los an\u00e1lisis microsc\u00f3picos tambi\u00e9n demostraron que la alta velocidad del proyectil en el punto de impacto eleva la temperatura y crea una zona m\u00f3vil donde los enlaces d\u00e9biles ceden ante la fuerza, mientras que el \u00e1rea circundante permanece estable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Este enfoque resulta sumamente atractivo porque puede aplicarse a materiales pl\u00e1sticos y de caucho comerciales ya existentes con una m\u00ednima intervenci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica. El equipo ha obtenido resultados similares con el caucho SBS, utilizado en suelas de zapatos y techos.
