Si bien los expertos llevaban tiempo intentando programar las c\u00e9lulas para que reconocieran y respondieran a enfermedades, el principal obst\u00e1culo hab\u00eda sido la falta de componentes gen\u00e9ticos adecuados.<br><br>Los intentos anteriores funcionaban de forma gradual, lo que significaba que cada nuevo comando requer\u00eda una capa adicional de operaciones computacionales dentro de la c\u00e9lula. Cuanto mayor era el sistema, m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente disminu\u00edan la fiabilidad y la eficiencia de estos c\u00e1lculos biol\u00f3gicos. Sin embargo, el equipo de Jerusal\u00e9n ha optado por un enfoque completamente nuevo que permite a las c\u00e9lulas ejecutar programas complejos con un n\u00famero significativamente menor de pasos y material gen\u00e9tico. De este modo, han mantenido la funcionalidad completa de la c\u00e9lula sin sobrecargarla.<br><br>Para lograrlo, utilizaron un proceso natural llamado trans-splicing de ARN, en el que fragmentos de mensajes gen\u00e9ticos se unen dentro de la c\u00e9lula. Combinaron este proceso con elementos reguladores dise\u00f1ados artificialmente. Crearon herramientas moleculares especiales que act\u00faan como procesadores biol\u00f3gicos, activando la expresi\u00f3n de genes espec\u00edficos seg\u00fan un plan predeterminado. Gracias a su capacidad para procesar m\u00faltiples se\u00f1ales simult\u00e1neamente, el sistema es extremadamente eficiente.<br><br>Como parte de la demostraci\u00f3n, los cient\u00edficos construyeron dispositivos biol\u00f3gicos que imitan componentes inform\u00e1ticos reales. Crearon un sumador biol\u00f3gico completo capaz de realizar operaciones matem\u00e1ticas binarias sencillas, similares a las de una unidad de 3 bits en un procesador. Tambi\u00e9n desarrollaron una versi\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica de un multiplexor, un componente electr\u00f3nico que selecciona y transmite m\u00faltiples se\u00f1ales. Todos estos procesos se monitorizaron mediante prote\u00ednas fluorescentes que emiten luz en diferentes colores.<br><br>A pesar del entusiasmo inicial, transferir estos sistemas de laboratorio a cuerpos humanos vivos conlleva riesgos impredecibles. Por ello, los investigadores ya han incorporado un mecanismo de seguridad. Si una c\u00e9lula detecta una configuraci\u00f3n inv\u00e1lida o sobrecargada, activa una alerta especial. Esto podr\u00eda prevenir errores fatales en intervenciones m\u00e9dicas en el futuro.<br><br>En el futuro, estas c\u00e9lulas inteligentes podr\u00edan monitorear continuamente el entorno del cuerpo. Una c\u00e9lula programada podr\u00eda detectar m\u00faltiples marcadores de enfermedad simult\u00e1neamente y liberar un f\u00e1rmaco solo cuando detecte una combinaci\u00f3n espec\u00edfica.
