Pero una vez que estos objetos cumplen su funci\u00f3n, se convierten en residuos extremadamente persistentes. El reciclaje tradicional requiere una clasificaci\u00f3n por tipo de material que consume mucho tiempo, es costosa y requiere mucha mano de obra, lo que significa que la gran mayor\u00eda de los pl\u00e1sticos terminan en vertederos o incineradoras, donde generan emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un equipo de investigaci\u00f3n liderado por la Escuela de Ingenier\u00eda Samueli de la UCLA y la Universidad Ewha de Corea del Sur ha presentado una soluci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica innovadora. Han desarrollado un proceso que convierte directamente una mezcla de tres de los tipos de pl\u00e1stico m\u00e1s comunes en hidr\u00f3geno combustible con una pureza extremadamente alta, superior al 90 %, en un \u00fanico reactor. El proceso se lleva a cabo a temperaturas significativamente m\u00e1s bajas que los m\u00e9todos de gasificaci\u00f3n convencionales, y el di\u00f3xido de carbono queda atrapado en forma de mineral s\u00f3lido en lugar de ser liberado a la atm\u00f3sfera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esta tecnolog\u00eda se basa en un tratamiento t\u00e9rmico alcalino, en el que el hidr\u00f3xido de sodio reacciona con la materia org\u00e1nica bajo la influencia del calor. Los cient\u00edficos desarrollaron originalmente este m\u00e9todo para convertir biomasa, como las algas marinas, en hidr\u00f3geno. Sin embargo, al aplicarlo a los pl\u00e1sticos, se encontraron con un problema: mientras que el tereftalato de polietileno (PET) reaccionaba perfectamente y a temperaturas significativamente m\u00e1s bajas (entre 300 y 400 grados Celsius menos que en la gasificaci\u00f3n con vapor convencional), el polietileno (PE) y el polipropileno (PP) eran inicialmente qu\u00edmicamente pasivos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Para activar estos dos materiales duros, los investigadores introdujeron una oxidaci\u00f3n t\u00e9rmica preliminar. El pl\u00e1stico se expone brevemente a un calor suave en presencia de aire, lo que incorpora grupos de ox\u00edgeno a las cadenas polim\u00e9ricas y permite que el proceso alcalino tenga lugar. El carbono liberado durante la reacci\u00f3n final se une al carbonato de sodio, que puede procesarse f\u00e1cilmente para obtener carbonato de calcio, un mineral estable ampliamente utilizado en la industria.
