Une \u00e9quipe de Stanford a d\u00e9couvert un moyen de convertir le fer en un \u00e9tat \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique in\u00e9dit. Cette d\u00e9couverte pourrait r\u00e9volutionner l&#039;avenir des batteries lithium-ion et d&#039;autres technologies \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques.<br><br>Les recherches montrent que le fer peut c\u00e9der et r\u00e9absorber jusqu&#039;\u00e0 cinq \u00e9lectrons, contre deux ou trois auparavant. Cela signifie que les batteries pourraient \u00eatre plus performantes et moins ch\u00e8res que celles \u00e0 base de cobalt ou de nickel. Cette d\u00e9couverte pourrait \u00e9galement avoir des implications pour d&#039;autres technologies telles que les appareils d&#039;IRM, les trains \u00e0 sustentation magn\u00e9tique et les supraconducteurs.<br><br>Trois doctorants de Stanford, Hari Ramachandran, Edward Mu et Eder Lomeli, ont dirig\u00e9 une \u00e9quipe de 23 chercheurs am\u00e9ricains, japonais et sud-cor\u00e9ens. Leur innovation majeure r\u00e9sidait dans la structure nanom\u00e9trique d&#039;un compos\u00e9 de lithium, de fer, d&#039;antimoine et d&#039;oxyg\u00e8ne. En r\u00e9duisant la taille des particules \u00e0 0,3\u20130,4 microm\u00e8tre, ils ont permis aux atomes de fer d&#039;\u00e9changer cinq \u00e9lectrons sans alt\u00e9rer la structure cristalline.<br><br>L&#039;analyse des spectres de rayons X par Lomeli a confirm\u00e9 le r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 de l&#039;oxyg\u00e8ne. \u00ab Il s&#039;agit de l&#039;action coordonn\u00e9e de toute la structure \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9. Des tests men\u00e9s au centre SLAC ont montr\u00e9 que le compos\u00e9 se d\u00e9forme l\u00e9g\u00e8rement lors de la charge, tout en restant stable.
