Mais une nouvelle \u00e9tude, publi\u00e9e dans la revue Nature Nanotechnology, r\u00e9v\u00e8le que certains monocristaux peuvent commencer \u00e0 se fissurer de l&#039;int\u00e9rieur apr\u00e8s seulement une centaine de cycles de charge-d\u00e9charge.<br><br>Pourquoi le nickel ne suffit-il pas\u00a0? La plupart des constructeurs de v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques misent sur des cathodes \u00e0 forte teneur en nickel, car cela permet une densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e et une plus grande autonomie. Le probl\u00e8me survient \u00e0 haute tension, lorsque l\u2019\u00e9limination du lithium fragilise les liaisons oxyg\u00e8ne de la structure. Lorsque des fissures se forment, l\u2019\u00e9lectrolyte liquide s\u2019y infiltre, d\u00e9clenchant des r\u00e9actions chimiques ind\u00e9sirables. Ces r\u00e9actions r\u00e9duisent non seulement la capacit\u00e9, mais augmentent \u00e9galement l\u2019\u00e9chauffement et donc le risque d\u2019incendie.<br><br>L&#039;\u00e9quipe de recherche dirig\u00e9e par le Dr Jing Wang a m\u00eame d\u00e9couvert que le probl\u00e8me ne r\u00e9side pas dans les joints, mais dans le mouvement in\u00e9gal des ions lithium. Au sein d&#039;une m\u00eame particule cristalline, certaines r\u00e9gions absorbent le lithium plus rapidement que d&#039;autres, ce qui cr\u00e9e des irr\u00e9gularit\u00e9s dans le r\u00e9seau cristallin.<br><br>\u2013 La surface de la particule change rapidement, tandis que le noyau reste \u00e0 la tra\u00eene.<br>\u2013 Lorsque la dilatation ou la contraction d\u00e9passe la limite \u00e9lastique du mat\u00e9riau, le cristal se fissure.<br>\u2013 La charge rapide accro\u00eet ces risques en for\u00e7ant le lithium \u00e0 se d\u00e9placer encore plus vite et de mani\u00e8re moins uniforme.<br><br>Bien que l&#039;industrie cherche \u00e0 r\u00e9duire l&#039;utilisation du cobalt, un \u00e9l\u00e9ment co\u00fbteux, des tests ont montr\u00e9 qu&#039;une faible quantit\u00e9 de ce m\u00e9tal dans des monocristaux s&#039;av\u00e8re b\u00e9n\u00e9fique. Le cobalt fluidifie le lithium et limite la formation de zones de haute tension. En revanche, le mangan\u00e8se pr\u00e9sent dans ces \u00e9chantillons a ralenti les r\u00e9actions et accru le risque de fissuration, malgr\u00e9 son co\u00fbt inf\u00e9rieur et son caract\u00e8re moins controvers\u00e9 sur le plan \u00e9thique.<br><br>Les scientifiques soulignent d\u00e9sormais que l&#039;avenir des batteries r\u00e9side peut-\u00eatre moins dans la maximisation de l&#039;\u00e9nergie que dans l&#039;homog\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9 des r\u00e9actions au sein du mat\u00e9riau. La prochaine \u00e9tape consistera \u00e0 transposer ces connaissances, acquises en laboratoire, \u00e0 des cellules de batterie compl\u00e8tes qui devront r\u00e9sister aux conditions r\u00e9elles de conduite.
