Plus petits qu&#039;un grain de sel, ces machines fonctionnent \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9chelle des micro-organismes. Cette avanc\u00e9e ouvre des perspectives in\u00e9dites en m\u00e9decine et dans l&#039;industrie.<br><br>\u00c0 l&#039;\u00e9chelle microscopique, les forces physiques telles que la r\u00e9sistance de l&#039;eau et la viscosit\u00e9 sont extr\u00eamement puissantes. Au lieu d&#039;utiliser des pattes ou des nageoires traditionnelles, ces robots exploitent des champs \u00e9lectriques pour manipuler les ions du fluide environnant. Ces ions d\u00e9placent les mol\u00e9cules d&#039;eau, permettant ainsi au robot de nager \u00e0 une vitesse \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 sa longueur par seconde. L&#039;absence de pi\u00e8ces mobiles conf\u00e8re \u00e0 ces robots une robustesse exceptionnelle.<br><br>Le principal d\u00e9fi consistait \u00e0 int\u00e9grer le processeur, la m\u00e9moire, les capteurs et les cellules solaires dans un espace aussi r\u00e9duit. Les cellules solaires recouvrent la majeure partie du robot, mais elles ne produisent que 75 nanowatts, soit plus de 100\u00a0000 fois moins qu&#039;une montre connect\u00e9e. Pour que les robots consomment si peu d&#039;\u00e9nergie, des circuits ultra-efficaces ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mis au point, r\u00e9duisant la consommation d&#039;un facteur sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 mille.<br><br>Ces robots sont \u00e9quip\u00e9s de capteurs qui mesurent la temp\u00e9rature avec une pr\u00e9cision de 0,33 \u00b0C. Ils communiquent leurs donn\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re unique\u00a0: par de petits mouvements rythmiques, v\u00e9ritables \u00ab\u00a0danses\u00a0\u00bb, que les chercheurs observent au microscope puis d\u00e9cryptent.
