Au lieu de dessiner des plans \u00e0 la main, les ing\u00e9nieurs ont confi\u00e9 cette t\u00e2che \u00e0 l&#039;intelligence artificielle. Celle-ci a test\u00e9 des millions de structures corporelles et de sch\u00e9mas de mouvement diff\u00e9rents dans un environnement virtuel. Le r\u00e9sultat est un robot atypique mais extr\u00eamement robuste, mesurant environ 15 centim\u00e8tres de long et utilisant une combinaison unique de mat\u00e9riaux souples et rigides.<br><br>Le principal atout du robot r\u00e9side dans sa capacit\u00e9 d&#039;adaptation. Lors d&#039;exp\u00e9riences, des scientifiques ont intentionnellement sectionn\u00e9 des parties de ses jambes ou endommag\u00e9 ses moteurs, sans que la machine ne s&#039;arr\u00eate. Son intelligence artificielle a calcul\u00e9 en quelques secondes une nouvelle fa\u00e7on de se d\u00e9placer en fonction de l&#039;\u00e9tat actuel du corps. Ainsi, si le robot perd un membre, il modifie simplement son centre de gravit\u00e9 et utilise les parties restantes pour ramper ou sauter, sans intervention humaine ni red\u00e9marrage du syst\u00e8me.<br><br>Cette technologie ouvre la voie \u00e0 l&#039;utilisation de robots dans des environnements trop dangereux ou inaccessibles \u00e0 l&#039;homme. De par leur petite taille et leur robustesse, ces machines seraient id\u00e9ales pour rechercher des survivants dans des b\u00e2timents effondr\u00e9s apr\u00e8s des s\u00e9ismes ou pour explorer des plan\u00e8tes lointaines o\u00f9 toute intervention est impossible. Un robot capable de se \u00ab r\u00e9parer \u00bb en modifiant simplement son comportement repr\u00e9sente un pas de g\u00e9ant vers une autonomie compl\u00e8te de l&#039;intelligence artificielle dans le monde physique.<br><br>Le co\u00fbt de construction d&#039;un tel robot est \u00e9tonnamment bas, car la plupart des composants sont imprim\u00e9s en 3D \u00e0 partir de polym\u00e8res courants. Le prototype complet co\u00fbte environ 95 \u20ac.
