Lorsque les temp\u00e9ratures d\u00e9passent 200\u00a0degr\u00e9s Celsius, la plupart des appareils actuels tombent en panne. Cependant, une \u00e9quipe dirig\u00e9e par le professeur Joshua Yang de l&#039;Universit\u00e9 de Californie du Sud (USC) a mis au point une technologie qui s&#039;affranchit totalement de cette limitation thermique. Leur nouvelle puce m\u00e9moire, appel\u00e9e memristor, peut fonctionner sans probl\u00e8me \u00e0 une temp\u00e9rature impressionnante de 700\u00a0\u00b0C, sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle du magma en fusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Des chercheurs ont d\u00e9couvert un m\u00e9canisme particulier \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9chelle atomique qui emp\u00eache les composants de \u00ab\u00a0tomber en panne\u00a0\u00bb sous l&#039;effet de la chaleur. La cl\u00e9 de ce succ\u00e8s r\u00e9side dans l&#039;utilisation du tungst\u00e8ne, \u00e9l\u00e9ment au point de fusion le plus \u00e9lev\u00e9, et du graph\u00e8ne, reconnu pour son exceptionnelle r\u00e9sistance m\u00e9canique et thermique. Cette combinaison de mat\u00e9riaux a permis au dispositif de conserver des donn\u00e9es pendant plus de 50 heures \u00e0 700 degr\u00e9s sans n\u00e9cessiter de rafra\u00eechissement. Fait int\u00e9ressant, cette temp\u00e9rature correspondait \u00e0 la limite de mesure de l&#039;\u00e9quipement des chercheurs\u00a0; ils supposent donc que la puce pourrait supporter des temp\u00e9ratures encore plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pourquoi est-ce important\u00a0? Le d\u00e9veloppement de composants \u00e9lectroniques fonctionnant \u00e0 plus de 500\u00a0\u00b0C est un objectif de longue date de l\u2019exploration spatiale. La surface de V\u00e9nus, par exemple, atteint des temp\u00e9ratures proches de ce niveau, ce qui explique la d\u00e9faillance rapide de tous les atterrisseurs pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents. Ces nouvelles puces permettraient d\u2019entreprendre des missions de longue dur\u00e9e vers d\u2019autres plan\u00e8tes. Outre l\u2019espace, il existe des syst\u00e8mes d\u2019\u00e9nergie g\u00e9othermique situ\u00e9s profond\u00e9ment sous terre, o\u00f9 les roches \u00e9mettent une lueur rouge, ainsi que des syst\u00e8mes nucl\u00e9aires et de fusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outre sa robustesse, cette nouvelle puce offre un avantage consid\u00e9rable pour l&#039;intelligence artificielle (IA). La plupart des syst\u00e8mes d&#039;IA reposent sur la multiplication matricielle, une op\u00e9ration essentielle pour la reconnaissance d&#039;images et le traitement du langage naturel. Cette nouvelle version haute temp\u00e9rature permettrait aux capteurs spatiaux ou industriels de traiter ces donn\u00e9es complexes directement sur site, sans avoir \u00e0 les envoyer vers des centres distants et refroidis. Ceci r\u00e9duit drastiquement la consommation d&#039;\u00e9nergie et le temps de r\u00e9ponse.
