Des chercheurs dirig\u00e9s par Siddhartha Somasundaram du MIT Media Lab ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 qu&#039;un capteur LiDAR int\u00e9gr\u00e9 \u00e0 un smartphone peut reconstruire des objets 3D cach\u00e9s, suivre les mouvements dans les virages et m\u00eame contribuer \u00e0 d\u00e9terminer la position de la cam\u00e9ra dans l&#039;espace gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la d\u00e9tection d&#039;objets situ\u00e9s hors de son champ de vision. Le syst\u00e8me ne produit pas d&#039;image nette d&#039;un espace cach\u00e9, mais il permet de reconstituer des formes approximatives m\u00eame en tr\u00e8s faible luminosit\u00e9 et de d\u00e9tecter les mouvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette technologie pourrait permettre \u00e0 l&#039;avenir aux v\u00e9hicules autonomes de d\u00e9tecter les pi\u00e9tons avant m\u00eame que le conducteur ou la cam\u00e9ra ne les aper\u00e7oive, d&#039;aider les robots \u00e0 se d\u00e9placer dans des espaces encombr\u00e9s et de permettre aux casques de r\u00e9alit\u00e9 augment\u00e9e de suivre les mouvements des mains d&#039;un utilisateur, m\u00eame hors de son champ de vision. Somasundaram a soulign\u00e9 qu&#039;une fonctionnalit\u00e9 qui n\u00e9cessitait autrefois un \u00e9quipement d&#039;imagerie sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 est d\u00e9sormais accessible aux d\u00e9veloppeurs de robotique et de r\u00e9alit\u00e9 augment\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces capteurs fonctionnent en \u00e9mettant des impulsions laser et en mesurant le temps de retour de la lumi\u00e8re. Les capteurs LiDAR grand public modernes peuvent mesurer ce temps de vol \u00e0 la picoseconde pr\u00e8s, ce qui est suffisant pour d\u00e9tecter des diff\u00e9rences de quelques centim\u00e8tres. Lors de la prise de vue hors du champ de vision direct, une partie de la lumi\u00e8re frappe un mur ou le sol, se diffuse vers un objet cach\u00e9, rebondit sur le mur et revient au capteur. Bien que ce signal soit extr\u00eamement faible, il contient n\u00e9anmoins des informations utiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&#039;\u00e9quipe a utilis\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me LiDAR portable d&#039;une centaine de pixels, chacun combinant un \u00e9metteur laser et un d\u00e9tecteur de photons uniques. Une image unique \u00e9tant trop bruit\u00e9e, les chercheurs ont combin\u00e9 plusieurs images gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une technique appel\u00e9e \u00ab\u00a0\u00e9chantillonnage d&#039;ouverture induit par le mouvement\u00a0\u00bb, qui exploite le mouvement naturel de l&#039;appareil dans la main pour combiner les faibles signaux et obtenir une image plus nette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le syst\u00e8me a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 avec succ\u00e8s trois capacit\u00e9s principales\u00a0: la reconstruction des formes 3D d\u2019objets statiques cach\u00e9s (comme un objet en forme de U), le suivi d\u2019objets en mouvement (notamment une balle rebondissant dans un coin) et l\u2019utilisation d\u2019objets cach\u00e9s comme points de rep\u00e8re pour d\u00e9terminer la position de la cam\u00e9ra. Les meilleurs r\u00e9sultats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 obtenus avec des objets r\u00e9fl\u00e9chissants, car les surfaces diffuses classiques renvoient beaucoup moins de lumi\u00e8re. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&#039;exp\u00e9rience a \u00e9t\u00e9 enti\u00e8rement r\u00e9alis\u00e9e avec du mat\u00e9riel standard co\u00fbtant moins de 83 dollars environ, et les chercheurs ont rendu le code et les donn\u00e9es accessibles au public.
