Malgr\u00e9 son utilisation r\u00e9pandue, ce mat\u00e9riau pr\u00e9sente un inconv\u00e9nient majeur\u00a0: sa fragilit\u00e9. Il a tendance \u00e0 se fissurer en cas de choc violent. Des scientifiques du MIT ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 qu&#039;il est possible de doubler la r\u00e9sistance de ces polym\u00e8res et du caoutchouc gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&#039;utilisation d&#039;une mol\u00e9cule de r\u00e9ticulation sp\u00e9cifique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les chercheurs ont int\u00e9gr\u00e9 au r\u00e9seau polym\u00e8re des liaisons volontairement affaiblies, appel\u00e9es m\u00e9canophores. Lorsqu&#039;un mat\u00e9riau est soumis \u00e0 une force ext\u00e9rieure, ces liaisons se rompent de mani\u00e8re contr\u00f4l\u00e9e au point d&#039;impact. Ce m\u00e9canisme ouvre des voies d&#039;absorption d&#039;\u00e9nergie accrue et redirige la propagation des fissures, tandis que les liaisons plus r\u00e9sistantes, qui supportent la charge principale, restent intactes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour tester cette propri\u00e9t\u00e9, les scientifiques ont utilis\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me sp\u00e9cifique. Ils ont projet\u00e9 des sph\u00e8res de silicate microscopiques d&#039;environ 0,001 cm de diam\u00e8tre \u00e0 une vitesse de 750 m\u00e8tres par seconde sur de fines couches de polystyr\u00e8ne. En mesurant la vitesse des particules avant et apr\u00e8s la perforation, ils ont calcul\u00e9 l&#039;\u00e9nergie emmagasin\u00e9e. Il s&#039;est av\u00e9r\u00e9 que le mat\u00e9riau contenant des m\u00e9canophores conservait une \u00e9nergie nettement sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle du polystyr\u00e8ne classique. Les analyses microscopiques ont \u00e9galement montr\u00e9 que la vitesse \u00e9lev\u00e9e du projectile au point d&#039;impact \u00e9l\u00e8ve la temp\u00e9rature et cr\u00e9e une zone mobile o\u00f9 les liaisons faibles c\u00e8dent sous l&#039;effet de la force, tandis que la zone environnante reste stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette approche est particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ressante car elle peut \u00eatre appliqu\u00e9e \u00e0 des mat\u00e9riaux plastiques et en caoutchouc existants et disponibles dans le commerce, avec une intervention chimique minimale. L&#039;\u00e9quipe a d\u00e9j\u00e0 obtenu des r\u00e9sultats similaires avec le caoutchouc SBS, utilis\u00e9 dans les semelles de chaussures et les toitures.
