C\u2019est pourquoi la DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) a lanc\u00e9 un programme sp\u00e9cial baptis\u00e9 ExPEDitions (Expeditionary Power- and Energy-Dense Implementations). L\u2019objectif de cette initiative est de cr\u00e9er des batteries dot\u00e9es de chimies et d\u2019architectures avanc\u00e9es, capables d\u2019atteindre une densit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique cinq \u00e0 dix fois sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle des technologies lithium-ion actuelles. Selon les rapports industriels, l\u2019ambition serait de d\u00e9passer la barre des 2\u00a0kilowattheures par kilogramme (kWh\/kg).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dans le domaine militaire, l&#039;\u00e9nergie est une ressource essentielle. Les technologies actuelles contraignent les ing\u00e9nieurs \u00e0 faire des compromis entre autonomie et performance. Les drones de surveillance doivent pouvoir voler pendant des heures, tandis que les drones de combat n\u00e9cessitent des pics de puissance soudains pour ex\u00e9cuter des man\u0153uvres audacieuses. Le programme ExPEDitions vise \u00e0 surmonter cette limitation gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des batteries capables de r\u00e9pondre simultan\u00e9ment \u00e0 ces deux besoins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les progr\u00e8s technologiques apporteront \u00e9galement un avantage logistique consid\u00e9rable. Chaque convoi de carburant et chaque station de recharge sur le champ de bataille constituent une cible vuln\u00e9rable. Des batteries \u00e0 capacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique nettement sup\u00e9rieure permettraient de r\u00e9duire drastiquement le nombre de missions de ravitaillement p\u00e9rilleuses n\u00e9cessaires au soutien des soldats et des syst\u00e8mes autonomes sur le terrain. Les drones pourraient rester en position plus longtemps et les v\u00e9hicules robotis\u00e9s pourraient parcourir de plus grandes distances sans d\u00e9pendre d&#039;infrastructures de recharge fixes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La d\u00e9cision de Washington r\u00e9pond \u00e9galement \u00e0 des enjeux g\u00e9opolitiques. Les analystes pr\u00e9viennent que les batteries ne constituent plus seulement une question \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique, mais sont devenues un outil militaire strat\u00e9gique. La Chine contr\u00f4le actuellement la cha\u00eene d&#039;approvisionnement mondiale des batteries, du traitement du lithium \u00e0 la production de masse des cellules. Face \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9lectrification croissante des v\u00e9hicules militaires, l&#039;acc\u00e8s aux batteries de pointe est devenu un enjeu de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 nationale. Des capacit\u00e9s de production nationales et des cha\u00eenes d&#039;approvisionnement r\u00e9silientes seront donc essentielles pour conserver un avantage technologique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette avanc\u00e9e majeure en mati\u00e8re de performances des batteries aura un impact sur la quasi-totalit\u00e9 des op\u00e9rations militaires. Des sources d&#039;\u00e9nergie plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res et plus denses r\u00e9volutionneront l&#039;\u00e9quipement d&#039;infanterie, les syst\u00e8mes radar portables, les v\u00e9hicules sous-marins autonomes et les r\u00e9seaux de communication. Le programme se d\u00e9roulera en deux phases de 36 mois, \u00e0 partir de 2027 avec l&#039;attribution de plusieurs contrats de prototypes.
