Si les experts souhaitaient depuis longtemps programmer les cellules pour qu&#039;elles reconnaissent les pathologies et y r\u00e9agissent, le principal obstacle r\u00e9sidait jusqu&#039;alors dans le manque de composants g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques adapt\u00e9s.<br><br>Les tentatives pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes se d\u00e9roulaient par \u00e9tapes, chaque nouvelle commande n\u00e9cessitant une couche suppl\u00e9mentaire d&#039;op\u00e9rations de calcul au sein de la cellule. Plus le syst\u00e8me \u00e9tait complexe, plus la fiabilit\u00e9 et l&#039;efficacit\u00e9 de ces calculs biologiques diminuaient rapidement. L&#039;\u00e9quipe de J\u00e9rusalem, quant \u00e0 elle, a emprunt\u00e9 une voie totalement in\u00e9dite permettant aux cellules d&#039;ex\u00e9cuter des programmes complexes en un nombre d&#039;\u00e9tapes et avec une quantit\u00e9 de mat\u00e9riel g\u00e9n\u00e9tique consid\u00e9rablement r\u00e9duits. Ce faisant, elle a pr\u00e9serv\u00e9 l&#039;int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 des fonctionnalit\u00e9s de la cellule sans la surcharger.<br><br>Pour ce faire, ils ont utilis\u00e9 un processus naturel appel\u00e9 trans-\u00e9pissage de l&#039;ARN, au cours duquel des fragments de messages g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques sont assembl\u00e9s \u00e0 l&#039;int\u00e9rieur d&#039;une cellule. Ils l&#039;ont combin\u00e9 \u00e0 leurs propres \u00e9l\u00e9ments r\u00e9gulateurs con\u00e7us artificiellement. Ils ont ainsi cr\u00e9\u00e9 des outils mol\u00e9culaires sp\u00e9cifiques agissant comme des processeurs biologiques, d\u00e9clenchant l&#039;expression de certains g\u00e8nes selon un plan pr\u00e9d\u00e9fini. Ce syst\u00e8me, capable de traiter simultan\u00e9ment de multiples signaux, est extr\u00eamement efficace.<br><br>Dans le cadre de cette d\u00e9monstration, des scientifiques ont construit des dispositifs biologiques imitant de v\u00e9ritables composants informatiques. Ils ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 un additionneur complet biologique capable d&#039;effectuer des calculs binaires simples, similaires \u00e0 une unit\u00e9 3 bits d&#039;un processeur. Ils ont \u00e9galement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une version biologique d&#039;un multiplexeur, un composant \u00e9lectronique qui s\u00e9lectionne et transmet plusieurs signaux. Tous ces processus ont \u00e9t\u00e9 suivis gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des prot\u00e9ines fluorescentes \u00e9mettant diff\u00e9rentes couleurs.<br><br>Malgr\u00e9 l&#039;enthousiasme initial, le transfert de tels syst\u00e8mes de laboratoire dans des organismes humains vivants comporte des risques impr\u00e9visibles. C&#039;est pourquoi les chercheurs ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 int\u00e9gr\u00e9 un m\u00e9canisme de s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Si une cellule d\u00e9tecte une configuration invalide ou surcharg\u00e9e, elle d\u00e9clenche une alarme sp\u00e9cifique. Cela pourrait \u00e9viter des erreurs fatales lors d&#039;interventions m\u00e9dicales futures.<br><br>\u00c0 l&#039;avenir, ces cellules intelligentes pourraient surveiller en continu l&#039;environnement de l&#039;organisme. Une cellule programm\u00e9e pourrait d\u00e9tecter simultan\u00e9ment plusieurs marqueurs de maladies et lib\u00e9rer un m\u00e9dicament uniquement lorsqu&#039;elle d\u00e9tecte une combinaison sp\u00e9cifique.
