Mais une fois leur utilit\u00e9 \u00e9puis\u00e9e, ces objets deviennent des d\u00e9chets extr\u00eamement persistants. Le recyclage traditionnel exige un tri fastidieux, co\u00fbteux et laborieux par type de mat\u00e9riau, ce qui explique que la grande majorit\u00e9 des plastiques finissent dans les d\u00e9charges ou les incin\u00e9rateurs, contribuant ainsi aux \u00e9missions de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une \u00e9quipe de recherche dirig\u00e9e par l&#039;\u00c9cole d&#039;ing\u00e9nierie Samueli de l&#039;UCLA et l&#039;Universit\u00e9 Ewha en Cor\u00e9e du Sud a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 une solution chimique innovante. Ils ont mis au point un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 qui transforme directement un m\u00e9lange de trois des types de plastique les plus courants en hydrog\u00e8ne d&#039;une puret\u00e9 exceptionnelle sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 90 % dans un seul r\u00e9acteur. Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 se d\u00e9roule \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures nettement inf\u00e9rieures \u00e0 celles des m\u00e9thodes de gaz\u00e9ification classiques, et le dioxyde de carbone est pi\u00e9g\u00e9 sous forme de min\u00e9ral solide au lieu d&#039;\u00eatre rejet\u00e9 dans l&#039;atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette technologie repose sur un traitement thermique alcalin, dans lequel l&#039;hydroxyde de sodium r\u00e9agit avec la mati\u00e8re organique sous l&#039;effet de la chaleur. Les scientifiques ont initialement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 cette m\u00e9thode pour convertir la biomasse, comme les algues, en hydrog\u00e8ne. Cependant, son application aux plastiques a pos\u00e9 un probl\u00e8me\u00a0: alors que le poly\u00e9thyl\u00e8ne t\u00e9r\u00e9phtalate (PET) r\u00e9agissait parfaitement et \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures nettement inf\u00e9rieures (300 \u00e0 400\u00a0\u00b0C de moins que lors d&#039;une gaz\u00e9ification \u00e0 la vapeur classique), le poly\u00e9thyl\u00e8ne (PE) et le polypropyl\u00e8ne (PP) \u00e9taient initialement chimiquement passifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour activer ces deux mat\u00e9riaux rigides, les chercheurs ont introduit une oxydation thermique pr\u00e9liminaire. Le plastique est bri\u00e8vement expos\u00e9 \u00e0 une chaleur mod\u00e9r\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#039;air libre, ce qui incorpore des groupements oxyg\u00e9n\u00e9s dans les cha\u00eenes polym\u00e8res et permet au processus alcalin de se d\u00e9rouler. Le carbone lib\u00e9r\u00e9 lors de la r\u00e9action finale se lie au carbonate de sodium, qui peut \u00eatre facilement transform\u00e9 en carbonate de calcium \u2013 un min\u00e9ral stable largement utilis\u00e9 dans l&#039;industrie.
