Mnoge regije diljem svijeta oslanjaju se na postrojenja za desalinizaciju morske vode, ali tradicionalne metode poput reverzne osmoze i termi\u010dke destilacije izuzetno su skupe i energetski intenzivne. Tako\u0111er zahtijevaju kemijsku obradu i stvaraju ogromne koli\u010dine koncentriranog slanog otpada. Kada se ova slana teku\u0107ina ispusti natrag u more, predstavlja ozbiljnu prijetnju morskim ekosustavima zbog pove\u0107ane slanosti i iscrpljivanja kisika.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tim istra\u017eiva\u010da sa Sveu\u010dili\u0161ta u Rochesteru, predvo\u0111en Chunlei Guom, profesorom optike i fizike, razvio je potpuno novi pristup. Njihov sustav se napaja solarnom energijom, ne zahtijeva nikakvu kemijsku prethodnu obradu i uop\u0107e ne stvara teku\u0107u slanu vodu. Tehnologija se temelji na posebno prilago\u0111enim solarnim panelima izra\u0111enim od crnog metala koji se tretiraju femtosekundnim laserima. Ova mikrostruktura omogu\u0107uje povr\u0161ini da apsorbira gotovo svu sun\u010devu svjetlost i istovremeno &quot;privla\u010di&quot; vodu. Laseri na panelu stvaraju aktivno podru\u010dje koje povla\u010di tanki sloj morske vode preko povr\u0161ine. Kada sun\u010deva svjetlost zagrijava metal, voda isparava i ukapljuje se u \u010distu pitku vodu, dok se otopljene soli i minerali automatski udaljavaju u pasivna podru\u010dja panela, sprje\u010davaju\u0107i za\u010depljenje sustava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Klju\u010dni proboj je da prava morska voda, osim natrijevog klorida, sadr\u017ei magnezij i kalcij, koji, kada ispare, tvore tvrdu, gustu koricu. Taj je proces sli\u010dan nakupljanju kamenca u bojleru. Kako bi to sprije\u010dili, znanstvenici su dizajnirali mikroskopske \u017eljebove u metalu i iskoristili poznati fizi\u010dki fenomen koji se naziva efekt mrlje od kave. Kada se kap kave osu\u0161i, ostavlja tamni prsten koncentriranih \u010destica na rubovima. Sustav koristi isti princip za pomicanje soli prema rubovima. Tehnologija je uspje\u0161no testirana s vodom iz Tihog, Atlantskog i Indijskog oceana, pri \u010demu se povr\u0161ina potpuno sama \u010disti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Umjesto ekolo\u0161ki opasnih otpadnih teku\u0107ina, ovaj proces uklanja gotovo sve soli u krutom obliku. Ti se ostaci mogu preraditi u kuhinjsku sol ili ekstrahirati u vrijedne sirovine poput litija, koji je neophodan za izradu baterija za elektri\u010dna vozila.
