Unato\u010d \u0161irokoj upotrebi, ovaj materijal ima veliki nedostatak. Klju\u010dni nedostatak je \u0161to ima tendenciju pucanja pri naglom udarcu. Znanstvenici s MIT-a pokazali su da se \u010dvrsto\u0107a takvih polimera i gume mo\u017ee udvostru\u010diti kori\u0161tenjem posebne molekule za umre\u017eavanje.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Istra\u017eiva\u010di su zapravo namjerno ugradili oslabljene veze, nazvane mehanofori, u polimernu mre\u017eu. Kada je materijal izlo\u017een vanjskoj sili, te se veze kontrolirano prekidaju u to\u010dki udara. Ova akcija otvara putove za pove\u0107anu apsorpciju energije i preusmjerava \u0161irenje pukotine, dok ja\u010de veze koje nose glavno optere\u0107enje ostaju netaknute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kako bi testirali ovo svojstvo, znanstvenici su koristili poseban sustav. Ispalili su mikroskopske silikatne kuglice promjera oko 0,001 cm brzinom od 750 metara u sekundi u tanke filmove polistirena. Mjerenjem brzine \u010destica prije i nakon probijanja izra\u010dunali su koli\u010dinu zadr\u017eane energije. Pokazalo se da materijal s mehanoforima zadr\u017eava znatno vi\u0161e energije od obi\u010dnog polistirena. Mikroskopske analize tako\u0111er su pokazale da velika brzina projektila u to\u010dki udara podi\u017ee temperaturu i stvara pokretnu zonu gdje slabe veze popu\u0161taju sili, dok okolno podru\u010dje ostaje stabilno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ovaj pristup je izuzetno atraktivan jer se mo\u017ee primijeniti na postoje\u0107e, komercijalne plasti\u010dne i gumene materijale uz minimalnu kemijsku intervenciju. Tim je vidio sli\u010dan uspjeh s SBS gumom, koja se koristi u potplatima cipela i krovovima.
