I primi test dimostrano che il nuovo chip \u00e8 quasi 500 volte pi\u00f9 efficiente dei processori attualmente utilizzati nello spazio, resistenti alle radiazioni. Il progetto, noto come High Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC), si concentra sulla creazione di un sistema speciale in grado di resistere a condizioni estreme come elevate radiazioni, forti vibrazioni durante il lancio e ampie fluttuazioni di temperatura.<br><br>A differenza dei chip commerciali standard, questo &quot;system on a chip&quot; (SoC) \u00e8 progettato per combinare unit\u00e0 di elaborazione, reti avanzate, memoria e interfacce di input\/output in un&#039;unica unit\u00e0 compatta. L&#039;architettura \u00e8 simile a quella presente negli smartphone e nei tablet, ma la versione per NAS \u00e8 specificamente pensata per ambienti in cui un guasto all&#039;elettronica comprometterebbe l&#039;intera operazione.<br><br>Il principale vantaggio del nuovo processore risiede nel suo supporto ai sistemi di intelligenza artificiale. Questi consentiranno alle navi di analizzare l&#039;ambiente circostante, navigare tra gli ostacoli e reagire a situazioni impreviste in tempo reale. Le navi attuali spesso utilizzano hardware obsoleto, poich\u00e9 i chip moderni faticano a resistere alle radiazioni spaziali, il che crea un collo di bottiglia nell&#039;elaborazione dei dati.<br><br>Gli ingegneri del JPL hanno sottoposto il chip a test rigorosi, tra cui shock termici e interferenze elettromagnetiche. Si sono concentrati sulla simulazione di atterraggi planetari, dove i sensori devono elaborare enormi quantit\u00e0 di dati in un istante. Jim Butler, responsabile del progetto presso il JPL, ha affermato che stavano testando hardware che consentir\u00e0 alla NASA di compiere i prossimi grandi passi avanti.<br><br>Microchip Technology, selezionata come partner nel 2022, ha investito risorse proprie nello sviluppo insieme alla NASA.
