At Google, a quarter of the code is generated by AI
Google is building many products with AI, and AI is helping to build them. “More than a quarter of all new code at Google is generated by AI, and then reviewed and approved by engineers,” said CEO Sundar Pichai. It’s a major milestone that shows how important AI has become to the company.
Artificial intelligence also helps Google make money. Google parent Alphabet reported $88.3 billion in revenue for the quarter, with revenue from Google Services (which includes search) at $76.5 billion, up 13 % from a year earlier, revenue from Google Cloud Services ( which include AI infrastructure products for other companies) and $11.4 billion, which is 35 % more than a year earlier.
The results show that although many believe that Google is no longer as reliable as it once was, the company continues to be a very successful business. Google Gemini is currently the company's most powerful weapon and also the most widespread across their entire portfolio of services and products. In Google Meet, artificial intelligence helps manage notes, and YouTube creators help with recordings.
Artificial intelligence is a hot topic at Google. This includes announced features like custom AI chatbots powered by Gemini (called “Gems”), automatic AI note-taking in Google Meet, and a range of generative AI tools to help creators on YouTube. And of course, in phones and headphones Pixel, where we can use Gemini and other AI tools.
"Our new AI search features are changing the way people search the web," said Sundar Pichai. “In the cloud, our AI solutions contribute to better product acceptance among existing customers, acquisition of new customers and closing of larger deals. And combined YouTube ad and subscription revenue exceeded $50 billion for the first time in the past four quarters.”
But not everything is rosy. In August, the US Department of Justice described Google as a monopolist, and one of the proposals for eliminating the monopoly position is to break up the company or sell certain departments.
