All-new Windows 12 this year?

Windows 12 is expected to be heavily based on artificial intelligence, which could lead to more stringent hardware requirements. According to reports, Microsoft will require processors with an AI unit, and the modular design of CorePC is expected to allow for a more flexible system. The new Windows 12 could be available for download as early as this year.

Microsoft could once again cause discontent among users of older computers with the next version of its operating system. According to new reports, Windows 12, which could be released in late 2026, will be based on greatly expanded AI features, which would require AMD and Intel processors with a built-in AI unit. This means that many of today's systems may not meet the minimum requirements.

Windows 12 is said to be codenamed Hudson Valley Next and will be based on the CorePC architecture, which enables a modular system design. This approach should allow Microsoft to tailor installations for different devices. This includes everything from desktops to mobile devices. The icing on the cake will be even better optimization of the entire system.

After investing heavily in Copilot, Microsoft is expected to make AI a core part of Windows 12. Machine learning would no longer be an add-on feature, but a core mechanism for recommendations, faster search, and game assistance through an improved Gaming Copilot.

The main reason for the stricter requirements is said to be the shift towards local processing of AI tasks. Processors with a built-in AI unit, such as Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI, can reach 40 TOPS or more, which relieves the load on servers and graphics cards. It is not clear whether Windows 12 will even run on processors without a built-in AI unit, but it is likely that such systems will lose some functionality.

Adding to the uncertainty are rumors about subscription models. Part of the cost is said to be tied to the improved Windows 365 service, while the basic version of Windows 12 Home could remain a free upgrade. However, users who recently purchased Windows 11 PCs could once again be faced with the difficult decision of upgrading their hardware.
