ChatGPT is getting apps!
OpenAI has unveiled new functionality at DevDay 2025 that allows users to use interactive apps within their ChatGPT chatbot. Users can now access services from companies like Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva, all directly within a conversation.
Instead of a separate GPT Store, apps are now integrated into ChatGPT responses, enabling better distribution for developers and a richer experience for users. A simple command like “Figma, convert this sketch to a diagram” activates the app. Similarly, a user can say “Coursera, teach me about machine learning” and begin interactive learning.
In a demo of the Zillow app, ChatGPT showed an interactive map with housing options based on location and price. ChatGPT can automatically suggest apps like Spotify if a user is looking for music to entertain.
OpenAI also introduced the Apps SDK. This is a development kit for creating these applications. The system is based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which allows you to connect data sources with AI. Applications can trigger actions and display interactive interfaces, including videos.
Users can log into existing accounts within ChatGPT, and Altman also announces monetization through Instant Checkout. Privacy issues remain open. It's unclear at this time how much of the conversation will be available to developers. OpenAI says the priority will be user experience, not paid exposure among competing services like DoorDash and Instacart.
