Electric cars on the rise, Tesla in steep decline
Electric mobility is growing rapidly in Europe. Sales of electric vehicles have increased by 26 percent in the last eight months compared to last year. But not all manufacturers are doing equally well. Tesla, the global pioneer in electric vehicles, is seeing sales decline in Europe.
According to DataForce (via Automotive News), the Model Y remains the best-selling electric car in Europe. However, sales fell 34 percent to 83,314 units between January and August 2025. The Model 3, the third best-selling EV, saw a 29 percent drop with 50,237 vehicles sold.
Although Tesla remains among the top ten EV manufacturers in Europe, its sales are declining while the competition is growing. Volkswagen took the lead in August with 16,105 vehicles sold, up 45 percent from last year. Popular models include the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.7. Tesla was second with 14,245 vehicles (-23 percent), while BMW was third with 12,546 EVs sold (+7 percent).
The European EV market remains strong. 154,582 electric vehicles were sold in August, representing 20% of all new registrations. Analysts believe this share is sufficient to meet the EU's emissions targets for 2025-2027. This represents a significant milestone for sustainable transport.
