Although the Samsung Galaxy S26 family of smartphones is not expected to be released until early 2026, the first information about its capabilities has already caused quite a stir. But surprisingly, its successor, the Galaxy S27 Ultra, is already gaining attention. It is expected to hit store shelves in 2027, with a completely redesigned camera system.

Rumors are circulating online that Samsung is ditching its current strategy of multiple telephoto cameras on its phones. Instead, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is said to be using a single, powerful image sensor. This will likely be a 200-megapixel, 1/1.1-inch (2.54 cm) Sony image sensor with a relatively large aperture. This would be a big departure from Samsung's own 1/1.3-inch (2.21 cm) ISOCELL HP2 sensor, as the new sensor would allow for better light sensitivity and 3x digital zoom without much loss in image quality.

In addition to the main sensor, the new Galaxy S27 Ultra is said to feature a 50-megapixel camera and a periscope lens with 5x optical zoom. This suggests that the new Galaxy S27 Ultra will have three cameras, additionally supported by laser autofocus and an LED flash. Samsung is said to actually want to simplify the design while improving image quality.

The decision to go with Sony's sensor also suggests a possible strategic shift. Perhaps as an attempt to better compete with the competition or to test new technologies separate from its own ISOCELL family of image sensors. While plans may change before final release, the direction of development already suggests a significant shift in Samsung's camera strategy.
