How did the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 pass the durability test?
Shortly after the Galaxy Z Fold 7 impressed the masses with its resistance to folding, it is now joined by the new Galaxy Z Flip 7. YouTuber JerryRigEverything put it through its paces in a recent video. Despite numerous scratches, fire, and sand, the phone passed all the tests with flying colors.
The outer screen, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, showed scratches at a Mohs level 6, and deeper damage at a level 7. This is quite comparable to other high-end phones. The inner screen, made of soft polymer plastic, started to show permanent damage at a level 2. This is comparable to a little more forceful pressure with a fingernail. Samsung does allow one free replacement of the inner protective film in the first year, and subsequent ones cost about 20 euros.
In the burn test, the external screen lasted over 20 seconds with minimal damage, while the internal screen lasted 15 seconds, leaving two permanent green marks from the heat around the edges. Dust scattered directly over the hinges (IP48) did not cause any damage. Although there was an annoying creaking sound, the phone did not stop working.
The final bend did cause the case to bend a bit and there was a crease at the antenna, but the device didn't break. Samsung's new hinge design, where the two halves of the glass are pressed tightly together, is clearly improving.
