Microsoft finally lifts Windows 11 upgrade block for older Intel processors

In 2024, Microsoft finally lifted the long-standing upgrade block that had prevented Windows 10 users with Intel systems from upgrading to Windows 11. The issue was related to an incompatibility with the Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) driver, a digital signal processor that handles audio processing on many modern Intel devices.

The flaw caused so-called blue screens of death and affected systems with 11th-generation Intel Core processors, so Microsoft blocked upgrades to Windows 11 24H2. IT administrators were able to track the issue through security ID 51876952. After a year, Microsoft fixed the issue and removed the block. This is the third security patch this month, following issues with Dirac audio and the camera app.

To resolve the issue, an updated SST driver, version 10.29.00.5714 or 10.30.00.5714 or later, must be installed. Updates are available through Windows Update, so users should check for availability manually. Once the appropriate driver is installed, the block will be automatically removed, but it may take up to 48 hours. If the upgrade is still not available, it may indicate that a compatible driver has not yet been released for the device, so users should contact the manufacturer.

Microsoft continues to work with Intel and hardware manufacturers to distribute updated drivers in a timely manner.
