Microsoft Surface event: 6 biggest innovations
A few days ago, Microsoft concluded a very special day before the much larger Build 2024, and we can say that we are very pleased with the innovations that it has prepared. In addition to upgrades to the Surface series, Microsoft has prepared innovations in the field of artificial intelligence, thus heralding a new era of personal computers in collaboration with Lenovo, Asus, Dell and others.
Given that Microsoft streamed the event online, you can read all the biggest news below.
Release of Copilot Plus PCs
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed how Microsoft is “bringing a wave of AI to PCs,” which includes a new category of computers called Copilot Plus. These devices are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors, with Intel and AMD chips coming later.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed how Microsoft is “bringing a wave of AI to PCs,” which includes a new category of computers called Copilot Plus. These devices are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors, which are based on Arm, and will later include chips from Intel and AMD.
The chips feature Neural Processing Units (NPEs) designed to power new artificial intelligence features in Windows 11. As a result, Microsoft says Copilot Plus PCs are 58 percent faster than M3 MacBook Airs. Alongside Microsoft's new Surface devices, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, Asus and HP are launching Copilot Plus devices designed to support the new UI features.
New “Recall” feature remembers everything you do on your computer
One of the major UI features coming to the Copilot Plus computers is “Recall.” It’s a tool that runs locally on the device and records everything you do on the computer. This allows you to find content you’ve interacted with at any time. For example, conversations in apps like Discord, or even searching for specific PowerPoint slides.
New Copilot integrations within Windows 11
Among other things, Microsoft has decided to include Copilot in several areas of Windows 11. The UI assistant will be able to help in the settings menu, edit files within File Explorer, or directly respond to notifications you receive.
Among other things, Copilot will get OpenAI's GPT-4o model, with which it will be able to answer questions related to what you will see on the screen.
Surface Pro will get a speed boost and the option of an OLED screen
Microsoft's new Surface Pro — without a model number — will swap the last-generation Intel Core Ultra processor for Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips. It is up to 90 percent faster than the previous Surface Pro and is available for the first time with the option of an OLED screen.
The 13-inch Surface Pro starts at $999.99 and comes in four colors, blue, beige, black, and platinum. It's compatible with the new Surface Pro Flex keyboard, which works when connected or disconnected from the device.
Surface Laptop, “which is faster than the MacBook Air”
Microsoft also announced the new Surface Laptop, which similarly offers UI-ready Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips. The device has a refreshed design with thinner frames and a haptic touchpad. Microsoft says the device is more than 80 percent faster than the previous generation and offers up to 22 hours of local video playback.
The Surface Laptop 6 is available in 13.8-inch and 15-inch screen sizes, starting at $999.99 $. It is also available in blue, beige, black and platinum.
Adobe, Davinci Resolve, Capcut and more are coming to Copilot Plus computers
Microsoft has partnered with companies such as Adobe to optimize their Copilot Plus PC applications. Arm64 native versions of Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Firefly and Express will be available on Copilot Plus PCs from launch, while Illustrator and Premiere Pro will be available this summer. Copilot Plus PCs will also benefit from the AI features within DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, Cephable, LiquidText and Djay Pro.
