PlayStation 6 with a huge amount of system memory?
Sony's upcoming PlayStation console has been the subject of numerous rumors in recent months. While the console generation refresh isn't expected until 2027, speculation is already surfacing about the technical improvements that the new PlayStation 6 will bring. One of the latest rumors claims that the new console will have a whopping 24 gigabytes of system memory, which would be a significant upgrade over the current PlayStation 5.
On DF Direct Weekly, Digital Foundry experts discussed the hardware of future consoles. Alexander Battaglia said that while it's unclear which direction Xbox will go, Sony will likely include 24 gigabytes of system memory in the PS6. The PS5 and upcoming PS5 Pro already do well with 16 gigabytes of memory, but the additional memory would improve the performance of machine learning and ray tracing.
This upgrade could justify a new generation of the classic console, but for now it's just speculation. Meanwhile, information has emerged about an AMD Zen 6 core codenamed "Magnus" that could power the next Xbox. However, this chip is too big and expensive for the PS6, and it doesn't fit Sony's usual codenames.
The next Xbox could have a top-of-the-line model with the aforementioned AMD Magnus processor, manufactured in 3nm technology, and as much as 36 gigabytes of GDDR7 system memory. The price of such a console could exceed the calculated 1,375 euros. Well-known blogger Kepler_L2 said in June that the price could exceed 915 euros due to features such as support for multiple stores, with the powerful processor further increasing the cost.
