The first commercial solid-state battery is coming to market
The world has finally seen the first mass-produced all-solid-state battery, promising to revolutionize the world of electric vehicles. Donut Lab, a company known for its innovative electric bike motor, claims that its liquid-free batteries are now available in gigawatt capacities for the global market.
Verge Motorcycles will be the first manufacturer to introduce this technology into series production, with their updated TS Pro model set to deliver the first vehicles with this technology to customers in the first quarter of this year.
What does the new technology bring? The solid-state battery is lighter, safer, and more energy-dense than traditional lithium-ion batteries. Key highlights include:
- Energy density: 400 Wh/kg (compared to standard 250–300 Wh/kg).
- Charging speed: Full charge in just 5 minutes.
- Lifespan: Up to 100,000 cycles without the need to limit charging to 80 %.
- Temperature resistance: The battery retains more than 99% of its % capacity at extreme temperatures from -30°C to 100°C.
Impact on range and usage The new Verge TS Pro with the standard battery (20.2 kWh) provides a range of around 350 km, while the optional larger battery (33.3 kWh), which fits in the same housing, increases the range to an incredible 595 km. Charging time has been reduced to less than 10 minutes, comparable to the time you spend filling up with gas and making a quick coffee stop.
Ecological and geopolitical safety Donut Lab emphasizes that their cells do not contain rare materials, but are made from substances that are widely available around the world. This means that production is more affordable and less dependent on geopolitical frictions, while the battery is also completely “green” and non-flammable even in the event of damage.
