The password for the Louvre video system at the time of the robbery was 'Louvre'

At the time of the brazen robbery of $102 million worth of jewels from the Louvre last month, the password for the world-famous museum's video surveillance system was simply "Louvre," said a museum employee familiar with the system.

The revelation comes at a time when the museum's security measures are under scrutiny following a high-profile theft.

During testimony before a French Senate committee last month, Laurence des Cars, president and director of the Louvre, said the only camera installed in front of the Apollo Gallery faced west and did not cover the window through which the thieves used power tools to break in and exit.

In addition, Des Cars said that all the alarms in the museum were working, as were the video cameras, but he pointed to a “weakness” in the security of the museum perimeter “due to insufficient investment.”

French investigators said the entire robbery took seven minutes from start to escape and that the thieves used a mechanical cherry picker mounted on a truck to escape the Apollo Gallery.

The director of the Louvre told French lawmakers: “The security system as installed in the Apollo Gallery worked flawlessly. The question that arises is how to adapt this system to a new type of attack and a mode of operation that we could not foresee.”

Although he praised the Louvre's security system for working properly, des Cars added: "Today we are witnessing a terrible failure at the Louvre. The security of the Louvre is one of my top priorities during my mandate and I reiterate that upon my arrival in 2021, I was appalled by the security situation at the museum."

While the investigation into the October robbery is ongoing, authorities have still not recovered the missing jewels from the museum, even though four suspects have been charged in connection with the robbery.

Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau said in an interview with Franceinfo radio on Sunday that authorities were still searching for the missing jewels.
