WhatsApp introduces message translation
How message translation works
If a user receives a message in a foreign language, they can press and hold on it and then select “Translate.” They can specify which language they want the translation from and to, and download the language for future use. Translation is available in individual and group conversations and channel updates.
Android users can turn on automatic translation for an entire conversation, meaning all future messages in that chat will be automatically translated.
WhatsApp emphasizes that translations are performed directly on the user's device, meaning the company has no access to the content. Messages remain encrypted.
Available on Android and iPhone
Android: Translation is available in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic.
iPhone: Translation is available in a wider range of languages, including English, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
Future functionality expansion
It's not yet known when translation will be available on WhatsApp Web, Windows, and Mac apps, but the new feature comes just months after Apple introduced a similar translation feature in its Messages app.
WhatsApp is rolling out the feature globally and gradually, without distinction by country. This means that the feature will also be available in Slovenia as soon as it reaches our region. There is no specific date announced for Slovenia yet, but there is no reason for it to be excluded – the functionality is tied to devices and versions of the app, not to individual countries.
