WhatsApp is preparing a personalized avatar generator
WhatsApp appears to be working on a new generative artificial intelligence feature that will allow users to create personal avatars to use in any imaginary environment. The feature in development, spotted by users online in the new WhatsApp Beta version 2.24.14.7, will apparently use a combination of user images, text prompts, and Meta's Llama model to generate images.
In a screenshot shared by user WABetaInfo, it says that users can imagine themselves "in any environment, from the forest to outer space." The examples look pretty typical of content generated by AI generators, especially if you've ever used apps like Lensa AI or Snapchat's Dreams selfie feature.
To create a personalized avatar, WhatsApp users will need to “take a photo of themselves once,” which will then be used to train Meta’s artificial intelligence to create images of the user in any environment. WhatsApp users will then be able to create their avatars by typing “Imagine me” with a description of the environment in a Meta AI chat, or in other WhatsApp conversations by typing “@Meta AI imagine me…”.
The feature is said to be optional and users will have to manually enable it in the settings before using it. WABetaInfo also states that reference images can be deleted at any time.
There is no indication when the new feature will be available to everyone. WhatsApp is still rolling out support for its Meta AI chatbot, along with its general AI image creation service, so it may be a while before we're all able to use the new avatar feature.
