Windows 10 is going away! What you need to know before October 14, 2025?
With less than a month until the official end of support for Windows 10, Microsoft is once again stepping up the pressure on users who are still using the operating system. The company has issued a reminder that Windows 10 22H2 (Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise) will stop receiving updates after October 14, 2025.
This date will also mark the end of support for Windows 10 2015 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015. The October security update will be the last, after which devices will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates that protect against the latest threats.
Microsoft offers home users the option to extend support for an additional 12 months through the Extended Security Update (ESU) program.
If you're still using Windows 10, you have the following options:
1. Backup activation (free)
Sync your settings to the cloud via OneDrive (5 GB free space). Requires a Microsoft account.
2. Earn 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points (free)
You can earn points by using Bing, shopping at the Microsoft Store, browsing with Edge, or completing tasks on the Xbox platform. Exchange them for extended support.
3. Payment recalculated 28 euros
Users outside the US can pay approximately €28 for a one-year support extension. Pricing may vary by region.
4. Unofficial option
With the free UpDownTool, you can switch to the Windows 10 LTSC 2021 version, which will receive security updates until 2032.
Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11. You can do this by upgrading your existing PC or buying a new one with Windows 11 already installed. However, not all PCs are eligible for the upgrade. If Windows 11 doesn't convince you, consider switching to Linux (Mint, Zorin OS, Wubuntu, KDE Plasma) or a Chromebook. Both can be great alternatives, depending on your needs.
