Artificially intelligent traffic control robot

A futuristic novelty has appeared in Binjiang District, Hangzhou: Hangxing No. 1, an artificial intelligence-powered traffic control robot. Developed by the Hangzhou Traffic Police Tactical Division, the first test began on December 1 at the Binsheng Road intersection.

Equipped with high-definition cameras and sensors, the robot helps officers direct vehicles and pedestrians. It performs standard traffic signals such as “go straight” and “stop” that were learned directly from real police officers. It also uses a digital whistle and is fully integrated with existing traffic light systems.

The Hangxing No. 1 robot doesn't just stop at basic guidance. It detects traffic violations in real time, such as riding without a helmet, crossing the stop line, and crossing the road illegally. When a violation is detected, its voice system immediately and politely warns the violator.

Its AI model continuously learns from real-world intersections, allowing for continuous improvement. In the future, it is expected to be upgraded with LLM functionality, allowing it to provide directions, traffic education, and complex voice interactions. While the exact battery life has not been disclosed, reports suggest that similar patrol robots in other provinces operate for 6 to 8 hours on a single charge.
