Smartphone manufacturers rarely dare to develop their own operating systems. Given the problems that Microsoft and Nokia had in the past, it seemed that the dominance of the iOS and Android OS platforms would continue to prevail in the market. Fortunately, this is not the case, as the company Liberux has decided to develop a smartphone based on the Linux operating system.

Liberux is already raising seed money for the NEXX smartphone via the Indiegogo crowdfunding platform, at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/liberux-nexx—3#/. Backers can secure their own copy of the new product with a contribution of around 1,300 euros, although it should be noted that there are also the usual financial risks involved. So far, only a small part of the target amount has been raised, so it remains unclear whether the goal will be reached. If so, the first customers will receive the Linux-powered phone in July 2026.

The special feature of the Liberux NEXX smartphone is its operating system: LiberuxOS, which is based on the Debian 13 Linux distribution. This operating system offers high stability, user-friendliness, long-term support and an extensive collection of software packages. Android is also a Linux-based system, but it is strongly tied to Google services. However, the Liberux NEXX should also be able to run Android applications.

The Liberux NEXX smartphone is powered by a powerful Rockchip RK3588S mobile processor with four Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. The device includes 32 GB of LPDDR4x system memory and 512 GB of eMMC internal storage, which is removable and expandable with a microSD card. It supports 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0, and includes two USB-C ports.

The device has a 6.34-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The camera and microphone can be physically turned off using dedicated privacy switches. A cheaper LTE version with 16 GB of RAM and 128 GB of data space is available on IndieGoGo for less than 900 euros.
