What will the 6G mobile network bring us?

The development of mobile networks does not stop at current standards. The Finnish research center VTT Technical Research Center has presented its strategy for the "beyond 6G" era, which is based on a holistic approach to digital transformation. The key focus is no longer just on bandwidth, but on creating an intelligent platform that combines communication, sensing and data processing into a single system.

One of the biggest innovations of 6G is the so-called “AI native” architecture. This means that artificial intelligence is not just an add-on, but an integral part of the network, enabling autonomous resource management, self-optimization and greater energy efficiency. VTT is developing advanced RF components and antennas operating at frequencies up to 300 GHz, which will enable terabit transmission speeds and centimeter-level positioning accuracy.

In addition to speed, resilience or system security is also key. VTT is introducing the principles of zero-sum security and quantum-resistant encryption, which are essential for critical infrastructure such as autonomous vehicles and smart factories. The networks of the future will also include drones and low-orbit satellites. This will ensure coverage even in the most remote parts of the world.

VTT's vision also includes a change in the role of end devices. In the post-smartphone era, sensors and communication modules will be embedded directly into furniture, clothing and household appliances, turning our entire environment into a service platform. The use of silicon photonics and optical solutions that drastically reduce energy consumption will be key to achieving this goal.

Although commercial outcomes are planned for around 2030, VTT is already offering testbeds and pilot projects to industry today. This enables companies to prepare for the arrival of new technology in good time and develop business models that will exploit the full potential of the smart grids of the future.
