Microsoft introduces new Surface laptops: lighter, faster and cheaper
Microsoft has confirmed the speculations and introduced two new models of the popular Surface series – Surface Laptop with a 13-inch screen and Surface Pro with a 12-inch screen. The devices are designed for a better user experience and greater mobility, putting Microsoft in direct competition with Apple's MacBook Air M3.
The 13-inch Surface Laptop is the lightest and thinnest model in the series yet, weighing just 1.22 kg, significantly less than last year's 15-inch model (1.66 kg). The device is suitable for everyday use, as it fits easily into most backpacks. It is available in three colors: "Ocean", "Violet" and "Platinum".
Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Plus delivers exceptional performance
One of the key improvements is the use of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Plus processor, which Microsoft claims provides a 50 percent performance boost compared to the Surface Laptop 5, equipped with Intel's 12th generation processors. This processor is said to even surpass Apple's M3 chip in some tests, making it a serious competitor to the MacBook Air.
The 12-inch Surface Pro also uses the same Snapdragon X Plus processor, which provides excellent performance in both laptop and tablet use. Microsoft decided not to offer the X Elite version in the new models, as it wants to optimize power consumption and ensure longer battery life.
Improved battery life
The new 13-inch Surface Laptop offers up to 23 hours of battery life, which is longer than previous models. Similarly, the 12-inch Surface Pro now offers up to 16 hours of use, a step up from the previous 14 hours.
Lower prices for a wider range of users
Also surprising, but very welcome, is the price drop for both devices. The 13-inch model will be available from $899, while the 12-inch Surface Pro will start at $799. This is a significant reduction compared to its predecessors, which started at $1,099.
Both devices are now available for pre-order and will be available from May 20 this year. With this step, Microsoft is clearly communicating that it wants to bring superior performance and mobility to a wider range of users, while continuing the successful use of Snapdragon processors, which combine power and energy efficiency.
On this occasion, Brett Ostrum, Vice President of Surface, emphasized:
“With long battery life, a lightweight design, beautiful new colors, and AI-powered experiences, the new Surface Copilot+ PCs are the ideal Windows 11 devices for those on the go – at an affordable price.”
