The new Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold failed a durability test
Four Google foldable phones and four failed durability tests. Last year's test was even dangerous, as the battery in the Pixel 10 Pro Fold caught fire while bending. This year's test brought at least a small improvement, as tester Zack Nelson did not have to use a fire extinguisher, but the rest of the story developed in a completely expected direction.
Despite the manufacturer's claims that the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is thinner, lighter, and three times more durable than its predecessor, the device still faces serious design flaws. The antenna lines, which represent the weakest points of the case, are located exactly where the phone would need the most structural support, right next to the hinge. Nelson's assessment is therefore unforgiving. Google has clearly not yet learned the right approaches to making durable foldable devices when it comes to hardware design.
Rival Samsung has been proving for years that it's possible to build robust foldable phones. With the exception of the limited-edition Galaxy Z TriFold concept, all of Samsung's recent foldables have passed rigorous bend tests, including the ultra-thin Galaxy Z Fold 8, which measures just 4.1mm thick.
The durability test and subsequent teardown of the device revealed a few more details. Oddly enough, the front display glass didn't crack when bent, but instead came off in one piece. A look inside reveals that Google uses a different, non-modular hinge design compared to Samsung. One of the positive features of the case is the built-in vapor chamber designed to cool the Tensor G6 processor during operation.
In addition to the independent bend test, the new product also reveals some typical weaknesses of modern foldable displays. Despite the official IP68 protection rating, dust and dirt can still penetrate the hinge, which can cause long-term performance problems. The flexible inner screen can be easily damaged by scratches with nails. The back of the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is made of plastic instead of glass, which means at least one advantage: it will not break if dropped.
