Can 3D printing replace classic bicycle tires?
Every passionate mountain biker knows how quickly a flat tire can ruin a mountain bike trip or even cause an accident. While airless tires have long seemed like an unattainable technology of the future, the creator of [Berm Peak] decided to put the matter to the test. He made his own working bicycle tire on a home 3D printer.
After some initial experimentation, he designed a model made of flexible TPU material. The key part of the design was a durable S-shaped structure that extends between the outer tread and the rim itself, mimicking the pressure of a standard tire. The entire product was printed in several separate parts, which were then attached to the wheel rim using a specially printed interface.
Mountain biking is an extremely challenging environment for such designs, but the final product proved surprisingly durable in a demanding off-road test. This is an extremely nice achievement for a home-made project. The latter of course raises the question of what specialized tire manufacturers could achieve in this area.
Despite the success of this project, there is some healthy skepticism about whether such tires will ever truly dominate the market. Today, most mountain bikers already use tires with a sealing fluid (the so-called “tubeless” system), which solves puncture problems very effectively. Nevertheless, the printed bright green tire without air is a very interesting and ambitious project that has attracted a lot of attention on the bike paths.
